A Louisiana woman has been arrested after allegedly shooting and killing her 1-year-old child on New Year’s Day.

According to Sulphur Police Department spokesman Maj. Jason Gully, police responded to a call to Kristin Bass’ home sometime after 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 1. Upon arrival, authorities reportedly discovered that the mother had allegedly shot her little girl, Acelynn Moss.

Bass, 28, was taken into custody and charged with one count of first-degree murder. She is currently behind bars with her bail set for $10 million.

The girl’s father, Bradley Moss, was at home at the time of the alleged incident. After claiming he heard a loud noise that was later confirmed to be the gun in question going off, the father said he immediately rushed into the room and allegedly discovered that Acelynn had been shot. Bass was still allegedly holding a weapon when the father arrived on the scene.

Authorities in Maryland have arrested a 24-year-old mother for the murder of her daughter, who was just 5 weeks old. Maryland State Police confirm Destiny Faith Chiveral, who lives in Charlestown, was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree child abuse resulting in death. Her baby died on December 4, and investigators claim the infant’s body […]

While speaking with KPLC-TV, Moss noted that their 2-year-old was also in the house at the time and had been crying out to him for help.

“I almost lost two babies. I lost one because her mama wanted to send her to God,” he claimed to the outlet. “[My older daughter] said, ‘Help me, Daddy.’ And Kristin said, ‘I just sent our baby to God. She said, ‘Now I gotta get her.’”

Moss confirmed the Department of Children and Family Services took custody of the surviving child after the incident. The status of the child is unclear at this time. Bass’ exact motive for the alleged killing of her daughter is also still presently unknown.

According to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, following her arrest, Bass was additionally charged with “Direct Contempt of Court,” but the details on the charge remain unclear at the time of publication

Louisiana State Legislature describes direct contempt as an act “committed in the immediate view and presence of the court and of which it has personal knowledge; or, a contumacious failure to comply with a subpoena, summons or order to appear in court, proof of service of which appears of record; or, a contumacious failure to comply with an order sequestering a witness.”

It includes, but is not limited to, “contumacious violation of an order excluding, separating, or sequestering a witness,” the use of “insulting, abusive, or discourteous language by an attorney or other person in open court,” “insolent or disorderly behavior toward the judge or an attorney or other officer of the court,” “breach of the peace, boisterous conduct, or violent disturbance tending to interrupt or interfere with the business of the court or to impair its dignity or respect for its authority,” or the violation of a “rule of the court adopted to maintain order and decorum in the court room.”
