With a few months to go until Bridgerton returns to Netflix, the popular streamer announced a brand-new show that could serve as a replacement for the Shondaland series. Bridgerton was an immediate hit for Netflix when it debuted in 2020. With cast members that included Golda Rosheuvel, Jonathan Bailey, Regé-Jean Page and the voice of Julie Andrews, fans couldn’t get enough of the book-to-screen adaptation. Ever since, networks and streaming services have been searching for the next big romance show that could ride the wave of Bridgerton‘s popularity.
Netflix has ordered a new historical romance series called The Granville Girls that adapts author Cat Cahill’s Gilbert Girls book series, as reported by THR. Adriana Maggs is on board as the showrunner and a writer for the eight-episode show.
Unlike Bridgerton, which is set is 19th Century England (and films in the UK as well), several of the Gilbert Girls books take place in Colorado in the United States, but production on the show is expected to be based in Canada.
The Granville Girls will center on a woman named Emma Daniels, who is chosen to work at the Granville Hotel and given a great opportunity to provide for her family. However, she must never mingle with any of the men, which is the biggest rule she must follow at the hotel. As expected, though, Emma gets caught up in a whirlwind romance with the man who built the Granville.
In a statement, Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury, Netflix content executives in Canada, said that The Granville Girls will focus on female friendship and the “allure of period romance.” They added that Maggs brings a “distinctive voice” to the project, and fans will be “hooked” right away.
More to come…
