New Details Emerge for Zach Cregger’s Scrapped Creature Feature THE FLOOD — GeekTyrant

Last year we learned that The Flood, the mysterious sci-fi horror project from Zach Cregger, had hit a wall at Netflix. The issue reportedly came down to Cregger wanting a full theatrical release, while Netflix preferred to keep it in-house.

Since then, things have gone quiet, and with Cregger moving forward on his Resident Evil reboot and talk swirling about a possible Weapons prequel centered on Aunt Gladys, it’s fair to wonder if The Flood will ever resurface.

Now we finally have our first real details at what the movie would actually be about, and it sounds like a seriously intense creature feature.

According to new info shared by Daniel Richtman, the film is described as a “survival horror thriller set during a catastrophic flash flood in a modern city.”

“As water rapidly engulfs an apartment building, a group of residents becomes trapped inside, forced to fight rising water, collapsing infrastructure — and a deadly creature lurking beneath the surface.”

That setup paints a nightmare scenario. A flooded apartment complex. Rising water levels. Structural collapse. And something hunting in the dark, submerged spaces. It feels like the kind of stripped-down, high-pressure horror that thrives on claustrophobia and panic.

The story centers on a group of trapped residents who are anything but unified.

Kate serves as the protagonist. She’s described as smart, guarded, and resourceful, eventually stepping into a leadership role as the situation spirals.

Ben is quiet and practical, acting as a stabilizing presence while everything around them falls apart.

Rachel is a desperate mother separated from her child, which pushes her toward risky decisions that could put everyone in danger.

Marcus brings internal friction to the group. He’s confrontational and distrustful, and in a survival scenario like this, that kind of personality can be just as dangerous as whatever is lurking in the water.

Then there’s the creature itself. It’s a fast, largely unseen predator moving through the flooded building. Its origins remain ambiguous, which makes it even more unsettling. Is it natural? Mutated? Something else entirely? The mystery seems to be part of the hook.

The concept feels like 2019’s Crawl, but filtered through Cregger’s knack for building dread and delivering brutal surprises. If he brought the same intensity he showed in Barbarian, this could’ve been an edge-of-your-seat survival horror ride.

The bigger question is whether the movie will ever get made. Netflix has a history of clashing with filmmakers who want their movies on the big screen. Joseph Kosinski reportedly turned down an initial offer to helm F1 for the streamer.

Greta Gerwig is said to have pushed hard for a theatrical release for her adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia. Emerald Fennell reportedly passed on a higher Netflix bid for Wuthering Heights, and The Duffer Brothers, creators of Stranger Things, eventually moved to Paramount under similar circumstances.

As for Cregger, his immediate focus is on the upcoming Resident Evil reboot. Constantin CEO Oliver Berben recently said that the film will be “far away from everything that is connected to Resident Evil, only because Zach Cregger has his own style.”

Still, it’s hard not to imagine how cool The Flood could be on the big screen. A contained survival horror thriller, a submerged predator, and a filmmaker who knows how to pull the rug out from under an audience sounds like a killer combination.

Here’s hoping the waters start moving again soon and this project doesn’t stay stuck in development limbo.
