Nicole Richie has some thoughts about Hilary Duff‘s new track — which is rumored to be about the reality star’s hubby!
Last Friday, the singer made a return to music for the first time in a decade. She is back with a new single called Mature, and it looks back on a past relationship with an older guy who used to say she was mature for her age. The lyrics read:
“She looks like she could be your daughter / Like me before I got smarter / When I was flattered to hear you say / You’re so mature for your age.”

With lyrics like that, many fans could not help but speculate that the song is inspired by her romance with Joel Madden, with whom she has a nine-year age gap. You may recall that they struck up a romance in 2004 — but Hilary wasn’t an adult when they got together. No, she was a MINOR! The Good Charlotte frontman was 25, and she was 16! Ick!
That is why, upon hearing the new song all about an old age-gap romance, fans immediately questioned if Hilary was singing about Joel! Take a look at the reactions (below):
“So, Hilary Duff fans, mature is about Joel Madden right?”

Hilary has not addressed the speculation yet. However, she shared some insight about the inspiration for the song in a press release, saying:
“‘Mature’ is a little conversation that my present self is having with my younger self. The two of us are reflecting on a past experience and sending love to each other. It’s a chuckle, a wink, and a sense of being grateful that we are sure footed in where we landed.”
Hmm…
If this is really a track about Joel, here is the problem! Hilary and her husband Matthew Koma are actually close friends with him and Nicole! They have been for years, even though The Simple Life star began dating Joel one month after his split from the actress in 2006! They’re even neighbors! Yikes!
So what does Nicole think about the song? Is she upset at her bestie? Shockingly, NO! The television personality was super supportive! Nicole took to Instagram Stories on Tuesday to post a photo of her and Hilary lying on the grass outside while holding hands and laughing. The fashion designer tagged the Lizzie McGuire alum, adding:
“‘Mature’ is not the word I would use to describe us, but regardless, this song is a BOP.”
