In a surprising move, Nintendo has announced the launch of an 18+ variant of the N64 Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) app exclusively for the Japanese market. The new app, set to debut on November 30th, will feature Rare’s Jet Force Gemini and GoldenEye 007, the latter of which was released earlier this year for Western audiences. The decision to introduce a separate app for these titles stems from Japan’s unique game rating system. Both Jet Force Gemini and GoldenEye 007 are classified as ‘Z’ in Japan, indicating content suitable for adults only, requiring an 18+ age verification for purchase. By segregating these titles into a specialized app, Nintendo aims to ensure that underage users cannot access or view the games.
The 18+ N64 NSO app comes as a strategic solution to comply with Japanese regulations and maintain adherence to age restrictions. This move also explains the delayed release of GoldenEye 007 in Japan compared to its Western launch. While Japanese gamers can anticipate the release of the new app at the end of November, Western NSO subscribers may have to exercise patience, as Jet Force Gemini’s release is slated for “December” with no specific date provided.
