Warning: Spoilers ahead for Stranger Things season 5, Volume 1.Over the years, Netflix’s sci-fi series Stranger Things has handled many tragic and difficult storylines, including significant deaths. Creators, the Duffer Brothers, have revealed why no one dies in Volume 1 and why.
Matt and Ross Duffer spoke to Variety regarding everything revealed in Volume 1, including why they chose not to kill any characters during the beginning of season 5. Two characters who fans were sure had met their end were Ted (Joe Chrest) and Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono), the parents of Mike, Nancy, and Holly Wheeler. Ross Duffer revealed:
Once we decided we knew we wanted to do the Will power stuff this season, we knew that that’s how we had to end Volume 1. So there’s the low point of all the kids being taken, but the high point of Will has these powers. That was always the discussion. Vecna taking these children was the low point we needed for the end of Volume 1.
Matt confirms whether Volume 2 of season 5 will get deadlier or perhaps bloodier:
I’ve said this before: The show is not “Game of Thrones.” I’m hoping it surprises people. But there’s no Red Wedding, if that’s what you’re asking. That would be depressing.
The comparisons between Game of Thrones have amped up lately due to HBO’s fantasy series having one of the most disappointing finales despite being one of the highest-rated shows. As with many TV series, the finale is something many fans look forward to, but also dread due to the worry that it could be a disappointment and leave people upset.
However, the Duffer Brothers have assured everyone many times that they are avoiding the mistakes Game of Thrones made and have ensured all fan questions and unanswered plots will be revealed, including what the Upside Down even is. In an interview with The Times, the creators revealed that even though this season isn’t as violent, “it has the most violent death.”
Despite the new season release making streaming service Netflix crash, Volume 1 has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes rating for the series so far. Fans are cautiously optimistic to see what’s in store for the fictional town of Hawkins and its heroes, but also to see if the evil that is Vecna will finally be defeated once and for all.
Stranger Things’ final season will continue with Volume 2, released on December 25, and the finale, which will be released on Netflix and select theaters on December 31.
