Guy Pearce is flying the flag for Australia at this year’s Oscars, with his Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in The Brutalist marking the first time he’s been recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in his decades-long career.
He’s got stiff competition in the form of A Real Pain‘s Kieran Culkin, who is also a first-time Oscar nominee – as is A Complete Unknown‘s Monica Barbaro, Wicked‘s Ariana Grande, and, of course, the controversial Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón.
Pearce, however, isn’t the only Aussie nominated at the 97th Academy Awards, with Oscar-winning animator Adam Elliot up for Best Animated Feature Film for Memoir of a Snail.

Elliot’s stop-motion film won Best Film at the London Film Festival in October but failed to secure a BAFTA nomination.
Clearly the film’s proved more popular in the United States across awards season, where it snagged Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards nominations.
The nod also means a nomination for Melbourne-based producer Liz Kearney.

Australian cinematographer Greig Fraser, who took out the Oscar in 2022 for Dune: Part One, is again nominated for his work on the sequel, Dune: Part Two.
In the Best Documentary Short Film category is I Am Ready, Warden credited to Australian film producer Maya Gnyp and American filmmaker Smriti Mundhra.
The documentary follows the last week of John Henry Ramirez’s life, after the former Marine spent years on death row for a killing he openly admitted to.

Aussie Rodney Burke, who was special effects supervisor on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is among those up for the Best Visual Effects Oscar.
Burke will be up against the team behind visual effects for Better Man – the Robbie Williams biopic, where the singer’s played by a monkey – which was led by Aussies Luke Millar and David Clayton. The film, however, failed to deliver a nomination for Australian director Michael Gracey.
