Warning: Spoilers ahead for Resident Alien season 4, episode 10, “The End Is Here.”Even though Resident Alien has always been a sci-fi show, the series finale snuck in a compelling tease that could mean a fantasy-led spinoff is coming from Alan Tudyk’s irreverent dramedy. With Resident Alien‘s ending managing to give all of its core characters a fitting farewell, a return to the show’s universe isn’t a necessity. However, it could be great if it happened.
While no spinoffs are currently in the works, showrunner Chris Sheridan has already discussed ideas he has to add to the saga. One of his early blueprints sparked into existence thanks to two of Resident Alien‘s best characters. If the project is ever given the green light, then the return of the rest of Resident Alien‘s cast is also possible in one capacity or another.
The Resident Alien Finale’s Fairy Reveal Would Make For An Awesome Spinoff Show
Liv’s Clever Ploy Resulted In A Surprisingly Big Twist
When Mike (Corey Reynolds) and Liv (Elizabeth Bowen) are given their new roles as secret agents at the end of Resident Alien, Liv tricks an interesting piece of information from her new employer. In short, fairies canonically exist within the show’s lore. With Resident Alien‘s main story now at a suitable stopping point, Sheridan seems to want to shift genres.
In a show like Resident Alien, the existence of advanced extraterrestrial life means it’s not unreasonable to assume that other fantastical beings are also present. So, while it may seem like a drastic foray into another genre, I think a fantasy-led Resident Alien spinoff show would work brilliantly.
The Existence Of Fairies In Resident Alien Means There Could Be More Fantasy Creatures
Why Draw The Line At Fairies?
If aliens and fairies exist in the Resident Alien universe, there’s no real reason to stop there. Just as shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer don’t focus on one supernatural species, the potential Resident Alien spinoff could easily begin to fold in creatures adjacent to fairies.
This opens the door to stories including ogres, orcs, giants, trolls, and magic in general. With how brilliantly Resident Alien has been able to balance complex worldbuilding, sidesplitting comedy, and tearjerking moments, I have no doubt this formula could easily be adopted by a fantasy spinoff.
Why A Fantasy Spinoff For Resident Alien Is Also A Risk
Resident Alien’s Original Cast Is The Show’s Biggest Strength
It’s certainly exciting to think of a fantasy show set in the Resident Alien universe, but the idea should also be approached with caution. For starters, the spinoff wouldn’t require any members of the original cast for it to work, and it’s their immense chemistry that helped contribute to Resident Alien‘s success. A cameo here and there would be good, but not essential.
Although there is an argument for Mike and Liv’s involvement in a fantasy spinoff show, they’re directly told in “The End Is Here” that they don’t have clearance for the fairy files and that they’ll continue to concentrate on monitoring alien activity. So, another show set in the Resident Alien universe would need a casting overhaul, which is a huge risk.
