Ryan Coogler’s new movie, Sinners, could be the perfect replacement for Max’s Lovecraft Country. With Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo, Sinners has a strong cast. Jordan plays two identical twin brothers, Elijah and Elias Smoke, who return to their hometown after a long absence. Their return is met with unexpected evil as they encounter terrifying vampires that threaten them and everyone living in the town. Sinners marks the first Ryan Coogler-directed movie since 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
As for Lovecraft Country, it was released in 2020, and is one of Max’s all-time best shows. Lovecraft Country takes place in the 1950s, when the United States of America was still legally segregated. The story follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors), his friend, Letitia Lewis (Jurnee Smollett), and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) as they search for Atticus’ father. During their journey, they encounter monsters inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, who was notoriously racist, along with other terrors.
Lovecraft Country Was Excellent (But Canceled After Just 1 Season)
It Received Critical Acclaim
Lovecraft Country was an excellent series that received an impressive 88% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Each episode was genuinely thrilling and suspenseful, both in terms of the characters, and in how Lovecraftian lore was utilized through the series’ use of outlandish creatures and fantastical plot twists. Lovecraft Country was a compelling horror series and a powerful exploration of racism and racial identity, including how it confronted the racist legacy of Lovecraft.
Horror director Jordan Peele was an executive producer on Lovecraft Country.
Despite the show’s many strengths, positive reception, and solid viewership, it was canceled after only one season. At the time, there was speculation that it might be because of the show’s cost or due to creative reasons. According to James Miller’s 2021 book Tinderbox: HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers, Lovecraft Country‘s cancelation was because “the environment on the show was not a healthy one.” HBO’s decision sealed Lovecraft Country‘s fate and ensured that the show would not continue.
Sinners Can Be Lovecraft Country’s Spiritual Successor
There Are Meaningful Parallels Between The Two Stories
Sinners has many parallels to Lovecraft Country, which gives the Michael B. Jordan-led movie the potential to be Lovecraft Country‘s spiritual successor. Both stories are led by mostly Black casts, along with being period pieces that cleverly tackle the horror genre. The horror is not only captured through each story’s monsters, but through exploring themes of racism and racial identity, which seem to be just as prevalent in Sinners.

Sinners and Lovecraft Country even share one of the same actors, as Mosaku played Letitia’s half-sister, Ruby Baptiste, in the HBO series and is a character named Annie in the upcoming movie. These kinds of stories stand out from other offerings in the horror genre because they provide more than simple scares. Sinners and Lovecraft Country‘s terrors are about more than monsters, as they provide thoughtful historical and modern-day commentary about important issues.
