Canadian singer/songwriter and Lilith Fair co-creator Sarah McLachlan will bring forth a new album, her first in more than a decade, this fall. Better Broken arrives Sept. 19 as her debut release for Concord Records and is led by its title track, which is out now in tandem with a Lauren Wade-directed music video.
“A lot of the lyrics on this record came from thinking about the world right now and asking, ‘How do we move through this landscape? How do we keep our heads above water when it feels like so much is falling apart?’” McLachlan says. “I don’t know if I have any answers, but channeling all that angst and uncertainty into the music has been so cathartic. I hope that this record provides people with some relief and release — but in the end I just want them to take whatever they need from it, and make the songs part of their own story.”

Better Broken finds McLachlan backed by such musicians as Prince and the Revolution’s Wendy Melvoin, drummer Matt Chamberlain and pedal steel player Greg Leisz. MUNA’s Katie Gavin contributes vocals to “Reminds Me,” while Phoebe Bridgers/boygenius producers Tony Berg and Will Maclellan lent a hand behind the boards.
The album is the follow-up to 2014’s Shine On, which debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. McLachlan debuted the material during two late May shows in Los Angeles but has yet to announce any touring plans.
