Sarah Snook is celebrating the role of a lifetime – or rather, 26 roles.
The Aussie actress just won a Tony award for her Broadway debut in The Picture of Dorian Gray, where she plays all 26 roles in the heavily praised one-woman show.
The 37-year-old was emotional as she picked up the award for Best Actress in a Play, gushing: “This means so much for a little Australian girl to be here on Broadway.”

Indeed, Snook is the definition of an Aussie born-and-bred talent.
Growing up in Adelaide, South Australia, she won a drama scholarship to Scotch College in Torrens Park where she first dipped her toes into the world of acting.
She recalled her role in the school’s production of Peter Pan fondly, sharing in a surprise episode of the school’s podcast: “I had a great time [playing Wendy]. I think I wanted to play Peter Pan is the honest answer.
“Peter Pan seemed to have more fun and Wendy was just looking after the boys. But I had a really good time doing that.”
She went on to graduate from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 2008, after which she kicked off her career in the play King Lear with the State Theatre Company of South Australia in 2009.

Snook then transitioned to screen roles, where she appeared in a number of renowned Aussie projects such as Packed to the Rafters (2011), My Place (2011), Not Suitable for Children (2012), Redfern Now (2013), Predestination (2014), The Dressmaker (2015) alongside Kate Winslet and many more.
In her early career, she claims she was criticised by others in the industry over the way she looked.
She told The Times that on one of her very first films, the casting agent rejected her “because you’re a nobody,” despite the director and writer pushing for her.
The burgeoning actress was told, ”What we’ll do is change all of you so that you’re marketable: we’ll whiten your teeth, darken your hair, we’ll give you a personal trainer so you can lose weight and look the part.”
On the same project she recalled eating a small piece of cake, for which the producer told her off in front of cast and crew. A costume designer then intervened and told her to keep eating, “and all the while I am dying inside.”
In the meantime Snook began gaining international attention with her films Jessabelle (2014) and Steve Jobs (2015) before her notable appearance in the Black Mirror episode Men Against Fire.

This 2016 appearance set the stage for her breakthrough role as Siobhan “Shiv” Roy in Succession, where she was loved and hated as the shrewd yet emotionally flawed only daughter of the Roy family.
On the role that skyrocketed her career, she shared with Marie Claire Australia: “I think people find something empowering about her being such a b—h. Well, she’s not a b—h, but … she is a b—h.
“They find her seeming lack of empathy and the way she’s pursuing her dreams quite empowering. Shiv is complex because she’s human, not because she’s a woman. I like that about her.”
As she wrapped up her role as Shiv in 2023, she shared with her fans on Instagram: “I just watched the final episode of the final season of something that has changed my life.”
She concluded: “Now, my life has changed again,” alongside a photo of herself holding her newborn baby.

Snook shares her daughter, born May 2023, with her Aussie comedian husband Dave Lawson.
The two had been friends for a long time before falling in love during Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdowns.

“At the beginning of the pandemic last year, I got locked down in Melbourne with one of my best mates and we fell in love,” she told Vogue Australia in 2021.
“We’ve been friends since 2014, lived together, travelled together, always excited to see each other, but totally platonic.
“We’ve just never been single at the same time. I proposed and we got married in February in my backyard.
“It’s been a ride. There’s so much heartache and sadness in the world, but on a micro personal level, I’ve been very fortunate.”
