Scary Movie 6 is officially happening, and though no plot details have been revealed nor has the cast been announced yet, one character has been confirmed to return – and it perfectly fits with the franchise’s style. The Scary Movie saga started in 2000 and was created by the Wayans brothers: Keenen Ivory, Shawn, and Marlon, with the latter two starring in it as Ray and Shorty, respectively. Scary Movie arrived during the peak of slasher movies in the late 1990s and early 2000s, parodying these and other popular horror movies.
The success of Scary Movie led to a series of five movies, but the Wayans brothers were only involved in the first two. Their absence was very noticeable in the subsequent sequels, with Scary Movie 5 not even having franchise leads Anna Faris and Regina Hall back. The Scary Movie franchise is now coming back to life with a sixth movie, which has the Wayans brothers back to develop it. It’s currently unknown if Shawn and Marlon will be part of the cast, but one character from the first movie has now been confirmed to return – and it makes perfect sense.
Scary Movie 6 Bringing Ghostface Back Fits The Franchise’s Comedy Approach
There’s One Horror Trend Scary Movie 6 Can’t Skip
Scary Movie borrowed the premises of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream, along with the latter’s iconic masked villain, Ghostface. Of course, Scary Movie gave them a comedic and at times absurd twist while also referencing other horror movies, such as Halloween, The Blair Witch Project, and The Sixth Sense, and movies from other genres, such as The Matrix and The Usual Suspects. Scary Movie’s sequels continued parodying the most popular trends, clichés, and horror movies at the time, but it never repeated its villains.
Now, Scary Movie 6 will arrive at a time when the horror genre is dominated by reboots, remakes, prequels, and legacy sequels, with big franchises like Scream, Halloween, The Exorcist, and more having already followed these. Scary Movie 6 will most likely make fun of these, particularly legacy sequels, and what better than bringing Ghostface back. Speaking to Crazydog500 on YouTube (via Collider), Dave Sheridan, who played Doofy/Ghostface in the first movie, confirmed that Ghostface is returning in Scary Movie 6, but he’s not playing him.
Sheridan even mentioned that following the style of the first movie and how it was heavily inspired by Scream, Scary Movie 6 would be “like Scream 5 or 6”. Of course, it’s unknown if Ghostface will be the main villain in Scary Movie 6 or if he will just make a brief but funny appearance, but his presence definitely fits the style of the franchise and how it makes fun of current horror trends.
Scary Movie 6 Is Facing A Big Challenge With Its Ghostface Identity Reveal
Scary Movie 6 Has To Get Very Creative
While it’s exciting and fun that Ghostface will return in Scary Movie 6, his presence is already bringing a big challenge to the sequel. The reveal of Doofy being the killer in the first movie worked perfectly because no one would have suspected that the supposedly intellectually disabled character in the movie was actually a smart, skilled, and fast serial killer. Doofy’s reveal was even more unexpected after Scary Movie revealed Bobby and Ray were the killers, which matched the twist in Scream, and Doofy was a fun extra that Scream never had.
Scary Movie 6 will have to go bigger than that with its Ghostface identity reveal so that it doesn’t repeat the surprise of the first movie but isn’t predictable either. Scary Movie 6 will have to be smart, creative, and funny with who the new Ghostface is, without forgetting that the main goal is to make the audience laugh.
