As far as celebrity breakups go, Shakira and Gerard Piqué’s 2022 split was pretty messy.
After 11 years together, Shakira and Piqué announced their breakup in June 2022 amid rumors that the retired soccer star had cheated on her — remember that infamous jam jar theory? What a wild time.
Pique’s apparent “betrayal” led to a messy back-and-forth of public disses between the exes, who share two sons, Milan, 13, and Sasha, 11. And while years may have passed since then, it seems Shakira is still grappling with the emotional fallout.
In a recent interview with The Times, Shakira said the separation was “the darkest moment” that led to “the dissolution of [their] family.” And as for whether she’s returned to the dating scene, the Colombian icon said she has “no space or time in [her] life” for romance.
The comment about her love life certainly caught the attention of fans, and in another new interview with People, Shakira doubled down on the claim, going one step further to say that she has “no social life” at all as a hard-working single mom.
“I don’t have a social life. Right now, no social life,” she said, acknowledging that she previously said “se pasa rico soltera” (single women have a lot of fun) in her 2026 song “Soltera.” “Yeah, it’s true, but not so much for me right now,” she said, going on to explain that she’s entirely focused on balancing motherhood and work commitments — which include a major US tour, a European residency, and a co-headlining performance at the first-ever World Cup Final halftime show in July.
“I’m not thinking of future partners, I’m just thinking of raising my kids. Maybe [I’ll date] when they’re older or something,” she said, revealing that her sons travel with her on tour. “That’s what I don’t have any social life, ‘cause I’m like, my kids, the stage, my kids, the stage. That’s how my life oscillates right now.”
People are loving Shakira’s honesty, but her confession that she doesn’t have any kind of social life has sparked a divide…
On the one hand, fans don’t blame the 49-year-old for channeling her energy into work and parenting, particularly after a painful split. One Reddit user wrote, “I think it can be healthy to distract yourself and focus on what you have going on in front of you rather than find a new partner ASAP.”
“I think this is pretty common for a lot of people, especially if they’re older. If you have a full and satisfying life, and you’re able to support yourself comfortably, the idea of getting into a relationship just isn’t that appealing anymore,” echoed another.
Also in her defense, someone said that “spending time bonding with your children may be the best kind of social life,” while another user compared Shakira’s comments to something similar that Angelina Jolie said in 2023 about her kids being her “closest” friends following her split from Brad Pitt.
And while there’s a lot to be said for taking a break from dating, not everyone is in agreement that your life should solely revolve around kids and work. “Having a social life is important for mental health, especially as a parent,” one popular comment read. “She doesn’t have to date to have a social life. Get the girlfriends together and go out to dinner.”
“I don’t applaud anyone for not having a social life, especially women after a breakup. It’s not healthy to pour all that focus on work and kids. You need a life beyond that,” one user wrote. “Don’t bring it to an end after a man. I say all this because too many women do.”
Among the comments on the thread, loads of single moms resonated with Shakira’s experience, agreeing that maintaining a social and romantic life is “tough” at that stage of life. However, others argued that it is increasingly “important to develop the other areas of your life,” especially as your kids get older.
“It doesn’t have to be dating. It can be hanging with friends. Travel. Hobbies,” one user wrote. “It might feel really loving to give the extra energy to your children. And it is. But it’s also painful, scary, and concerning to watch your mother’s life get smaller as you age because there isn’t much else to it. Speaking from experience.”
So, this is definitely a very nuanced conversation, but as long as she’s happy, who are we to judge!
