It’s Saturday once again, and that means its time for Weekend Reading 187! This will come as no surprise, but The Beat elite are once again holing up inside Stately Beat Manor, getting lost in a good book.

As ever, we hope you’ll share you reading plans with us. Let us know what you’ll be paging through in the comment section!

Weekend Reading 187
Weekend Reading 187: Peepee Poopoo #80085 and Pet Peeves.

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I’m checking out Pet Peeves by Nicole Goux. As a huge fan of Everyone is Tulip, to say I’m excited about the book is an understatement! Then, an awesome Silver Sprocket delivery has brought Peepee Poopoo #80085 by Caroline Cash to my door. My cup floweth over!

Weekend Reading 187
Weekend Reading 187: The Haunting of Hill House & Drama.

KELAS LLOYD: I’m finally getting around to reading two books I’ve been meaning to read for a while. First up is The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. I loved the Netflix series and hear this is different but more queer so I have high hopes for that. The second is Drama by Rana Telgemier. Since it’s back being talked about as if it’s controversial again I think it’s really time I read the whole thing myself.

Weekend Reading 187
Weekend Reading 187: Invincible and TMNT Adventures.

TAIMUR DAR: I’m in the midst of recovering from a minor cold, thus I’m looking to take it easy this weekend. So it’s perfect time to sit back and relax. Most people likely know I’m all about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It occurred to me that I have yet to check out the Archie era of the TMNT. So I’m rectifying that with the TMNT Adventures Volume 2 trade collection. Likewise, I’m nearing the end of my Invincible read.

Weekend Reading 187
Weekend Reading 187: Asadora!

D. Morris: Seeing Godzilla Minus One put me in the mood to catch up with Asadora!, Naoki Urasawa’s most recent series. Anything Urusawa does is a must read for me and Asadora! is no exception. I love how he skillfully combines the story of a girl growing up in 1960s Japan and the mystery behind a possible Kaiju.

Weekend Reading 187
Weekend Reading 187: Newburn.

CY BELTRAN: Aside from the new episode of Doctor Who, I plan to sit down and catch up on Newburn, the crime comic from Chip Zdarsky and Jacob Phillips. I caught the first few issues as they were coming out, but fell behind somewhere along the way, and I figure this is as good a weekend as any to catch up.

Weekend Reading 187
Weekend Reading 187: The Dangerous Convenience Store Vol. 1

KRISTINA ELYSE BUTKE: I took a break from weekend reading during the Thanksgiving holiday, so I’m happy to be back on a reading schedule. I’m diving into The Dangerous Convenience Store Vol. 1 by 945, which is a BL manhwa about a convenience store worker whose shop is frequented by shady characters, and the gangster he meets who changes his life with something more than just friendship. I’m looking forward to this one!

Weekend Reading 187
Weekend Reading 187: El Deafo

REBECCA OLIVER KAPLAN: This weekend I’m reading El Deafo: Superpowered Edition! by Cece Bell.

Weekend Reading 187
Weekend Reading 187: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.

DEAN SIMONS: Started a new(ish) manga recently which I have been finding intriguing – Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe. It is a fantasy series that follows a member of a heroic party after the Grand World Saving Quest™ has concluded. This member is an elfen mage who ages far slower than their comrades, and has a different understanding of the world – and times passing – that has them come across as a bit more aloof and isolated. In many ways it reads almost as if the protagonist is on the spectrum, which I find makes it particularly compelling to read. It’s so far episodic approach slows the pace and makes the story easy to dip in and out of. Nearing the end of volume 1 and will start volume 2 over the weekend. The series began serialisation in 2020 and is being published in English with Viz; translation by Mina ‘Japanese Ammo’. Meanwhile, I recently noticed that I hadn’t finished writer Robert Venditti’s Valiant revival X-O Manowar series that ran 2012-2017, so I have been correcting that mistake on and off for the past two weeks. Up to the last two arcs (circa #42). Hopefully make more progress on that.
