SHUT IN THEATER: Weekend Reading 193

January continues with the spooky thirteenth, and with it comes Weekend Reading 193! As you might imagine, The Beat Elite are holing up in Stately Beat Manor and getting lost in a good book.

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend I’m going to be reading Haunted Heart of San Diego by Brian Clune with Bob Davis. I have only read the dedication so far, but dedicating the book to COVID-19 first responders and the Blue Orb of the USS Midway has already deeply endeared me to this volume. Then as far as comics go, I’ve been reminded of how much I enjoyed reading and learning from Hidden Systems by Dan Nott, so I’ll be revisiting that.

CHRISTIAN ANGELES: I’m gonna check out the new Ultimate Spider-Man issue #1. I’ve also got the trade of Local Man by Tim Seeley I’ve been meaning to get through and am currently reading Zoe Thoroughgood’s The Impending Blindness of Billy Scott which has been a fantastic read I am relating to even though she’s telling a story of someone a decade younger. 

D. Morris: Among other reading projects, I’ve started reading Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin.

ILGIN SİDE SOYSAL: I am gonna start reading the manga BlackCatVampire_Vol1. I am planning to review it.  Since  I am a huge fan of Vampires and Black Cats [haha lol  ?] the title was enough to get me intrigued. Supernatural & School Life with Vampire in it, hmm yummy. It involves the Boys’ Love genre as well. The art style seems promising too, I am pretty sure I am gonna have a fun time with it.  

MERVE GİRAY: With the hopes of making a dent in my TBR pile, I’m hoping to finish all three volumes of Ai Tanaka’s Apple Children of Aeon, out from Kodansha. Wish me luck!

TAIMUR DAR: It dawned on me that I’ve never properly read the “Tower of Babel” storyline in JLA #43-46 from writer Mark Waid. It’s one of the best Justice League storylines that inspired the Justice League: Doom animated film, which is a personal favorite. So it’s time I rectify that and read the “Tower of Babel” for myself. 

DEAN SIMONS: This weekend – in anticipation of Angoulême – I will be reading Riad Sattouf’s autobio graphic novel The Arab of the Future (vol 2) – in which little Riad, age 6, starts school in Syria – translated by Sam Taylor and published by Two Roads. A solid mix of macabre humour, history, politics, and memory. 

JUSTIN GUERRERO: Another week, another series to catch up on and binge read. This weekend and last weekend I’ve been dedicating my time to reading all of the episodes of Catfish’s webtoon Little Mizzi Muffet and The Spider King. I started reading it a while back but seeing as it now is about to reach 250,000 subscribers on Webtoon Canvas, I was like may as well catch up on the story. Easier to catch up on compared to One Piece lol. Be sure to give it a read if you’re into a supernatural webtoon with some horror elements and an adorable art style.
