As June continues, Weekend Reading 212 arrives. You know the drill: we’ll be spending Saturday & Sunday holed up in Stately Beat Manor, getting lost in a good book.

What will you be paging through this weekend? Be sure and let us know in the comment section, or over on our Bluesky page.

Weekend Reading 212: Read At Your Own Risk & Death’s End.

AVERY KAPLAN: This weekend, I’m checking out Read At Your Own Risk by Remy Lai. Previously, I enjoyed Lai’s Ghost Book. However, I am particularly interested in Read At Your Own Risk because it affects the style of a notebook filled with a child’s personal recordings. I have long been a fan of the “primary sources” storytelling technique, which I find immersive and effective. (Does it still count as epistolary if it’s a personal notebook rather than letters?) So I am looking forward to acting against my best interests and reading this book in spite of the implicit warning!

Then as far as prose goes, I think it’s time for me to finish the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy. So this weekend, I’ll be tackling Death’s End by Cixin Liu, and translated by The Three-Body Problem translator alum Ken Liu.

Judge Dredd Megazine #463

DEAN SIMONS: I made it! The final Judge Dredd Megazine issue of 2023! The Xmas special (#463) which concludes some of my recent highlights: the latest Lawless storyline by Dan Abnett and Phil Winslade, and the excellent Johnny Red reprint by Garth Ennis and Keith Burns (first published by Titan). Meanwhile another recent fave series reaches its penultimate installment in Spector by John Wagner and Dan Cornwell. Six issues until I am back on top after being over 3.5 years behind.

Weekend Reading 212: Bubblegum Crisis: Grand Mal.

D. MORRIS: With the announcement of the Bubblegum Crisis: Complete Archive and that he’s writing the forward, now seems like a great time to reread Bubblegum Crisis: Grand Mal by Adam Warren.

Weekend Reading 212: Scarlet.

TAIMUR DAR: I’ve been enjoying Masterclass, the latest comic collaboration from Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. It dawned on me that I never read Scarlet, so it’s a good time to finally check it out. In addition, I have a feeling since Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker are involved in the upcoming Batman: Caped Crusader animated series, it might takes some cues from their acclaimed Gotham Central comic series. Yet another acclaimed run that’s been on my list that I’m also going to read over the weekend.

Weekend Reading 212: The Ghost in the Shell Vol 1.5.

BEAU Q.: So Ghost in the Shell [vols 1, 1.5, and 2] suddenly floated to the top of my reread stack for some reason, and I’ll be continuing my return trip into those volumes by Shirow Masamune– two of those volumes have the early 2000s mirrored pages! It’s always so fascinating to see how uninterrupted Masamune’s reading lines are even if the illustration quality loses a near-imperceptible little bit of its charm from being flipped! I’m also catching up on Boruto: Two Blue Vortex by Masashi Kishimoto and Mikio Ikemoto, because I wanted to perceive the little intricacies of how/why Ikemoto sticks to and/or breaks his large margin layout formula. So, a weekend stuck under the shonen side of my manga pile is in order !!
