Gogol Bordello celebrated the drop date of their new album ‘We Mean It, Man!’ with a full-tilt blow-out of a record release party in downtown NYC last Friday (February 13th). Spin aligned with the band’s Casa Gogol Records at Silver Lining Lounge for the sweat-soaked affair, which felt less like an industry party and more like a family reunion for the Big Apple’s alternative underground.
Frontman Eugene Hütz held court, rallying the room around the new material, including the single “Ignition,” the infectious synth-fueled “Life is Possible Again,” and the frantic title track. The Gogol Bordelo frontman also performed a crowd-pleasing DJ set.
‘We Mean It, Man!’ was produced by Nick Launay (known for his work with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Nick Cave, Amyl & the Sniffers) with Adam “Atom” Greenspan (Arcade Fire, Idols). Gogol Bordello’s new album is a tightly wound blast of dance-floor defiance, anchored by the eye-catching video for “Ignition,” which stars actor Liev Schreiber.
The night also doubled as a showcase for other artists in the Casa Gogol orbit. Leaders of the so-called “NewNewYork” crew — including Puzzled Panther, PONS, Grace Bergere, and Mary Shelley — each brought their own sharp-edged sets, previewing forthcoming 2026 releases and underscoring the label’s mission of continuity and rebirth of “NY cool.”
Puzzled Panther, which includes YYY’s Brian Chase on drums and Hütz on guitar, leaned into angular art-punk winners like “Fractured.” Their standout cover of Sonic Youth’s “Dirty Boots” that felt tailor-made for a packed downtown room.
In keeping with Hütz’s desire to get his “post-punk revenge” with ‘We Mean It, Man!’, the energy never dipped last Friday — from the first distortion blast to the last beat. One thing is certain, Gogol Bordello and the artists in their universe proved that New York’s alternative movement is alive and thriving.
