Is a new Green Lantern coming to James Gunn’s DC Universe? Sterling K. Brown reveals he still wants to play John Stewart in the DC Universe!
Ever since it was confirmed John Stewart would finally make his live-action debut in the new DC Universe with the upcoming Lanterns Max show, fans have been speculating who would play the iconic Green Lantern. Topping many people’s lists was Sterling K. Brown, best known for his role as N’Jobu in Black Panther. When asked if he’d be interested in joining the DC, Brown revealed his excitement at the thought of playing the role:
“I watched that Justice League cartoon religiously in like high school, college right after, etc. It was dope,” Brown explained in a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes. “Seeing John Stewart, knowing that there was a black Green Lantern was something like in terms of representation, was like ‘Oh Man! There’s a space for me in this world and I see it.’ And when I looked [at the cartoon], I would think, ‘I kind of look like this dude.’”
“If it could happen, that would be legitimately exciting. That would be one of those giddy-inducing moments in life because my kids would get it, without me having to explain it to them.”
Lanterns is set to be the live-action debut of John Stewart, with his only prior incarnation being Wayne T. Carr’s scrapped role in the Justice League Snyder Cut. The Max series is set to follow Stewart and fellow Green Lantern Hal Jordan as they investigate a terrifying new mystery, making the role a perfect fit for Sterling K. Brown’s dramatic roots. Here’s to hoping James Gunn makes the right call in bringing him into the DC Universe!
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
