Steve Guttenberg seemingly foreshadowed his divorce filing in a video message on Instagram earlier this year.
Us Weekly confirmed on Monday, April 7 that The Three Men and a Baby actor, 66, had filed for divorce from his wife of six years, Emily Guttenberg, three days prior.
In hindsight, a video that Steve posted on January 5 seems to have hinted at the couple’s marital trouble.
“It’s the beginning of the new year,” he said at the time. “And I start the new year with something positive. I want to focus my energy on the things that matter. I don’t want to sweat the small stuff. I want to take my time seriously and not waste it. I want to spend time with people that love me and people that I love, so those are the things that I’m thinking about at the beginning of the year.”
Steve added: “I want to have contentment. Yeah, I think that’s something I’m really thinking about for this year: to be content.”
Flash forward to Friday, April 4: Steve submitted divorce paperwork at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for his split with Emily, according to court documents obtained by Us.
He did not specify the date of their separation. Instead, he wrote “TBD” under the date section of the documents. Per the papers, Steve and Emily had a prenuptial agreement that will determine how “the community property assets and debts of the community, if any, should be divided.”
Steve agreed to pay Emily spousal support, and asked the court that both parties pay their respective attorneys’ fees and costs moving forward.
Us Weekly has reached out to Steve for comment.
The Police Academy star met Emily, a news anchor, on a blind date in 2014 set up by WCBS-TV correspondent Scott Rapoport. The pair announced their engagement in December 2016 after celebrating Christmas together. “Yes, yes, yes,” Emily wrote via Facebook at the time.
“I don’t want to give these things a jinx, but she makes me a better person, which I really like. I have to up my game around her,” Steve gushed during a 2017 interview with the Daily Beast. “She’s a very classy lady. She creates a wonderful home, her value system is terrific, and her character and integrity, and sense of humor … she’s a really nice lady.”
Us confirmed in January 2019 that the pair had married in Malibu, California. “Here Comes The Bride #SweetStunningEm,” Rapoport, their mutual pal, tweeted at the time, posting a photo of Emily in a white gown.
Steve was previously married to model Denise Bixler from 1988 to 1992.
