Warner Bros. and DC Studios have seen Superman fly up, up and away at the box office, with the film representing a strong financial start for the new DC Universe. With a slew of characters set to get movies and television shows, the studio may have just revealed the next superhero who is set to get the feature film treatment — and it’s someone that has been seen in the universe already.
A post on X from the user @KnightGambit noted that DC Comics submitted a copyright claim for “Mr. Terrific” on July 16, just several days after Superman hit theaters. It wouldn’t be a surprise if DC was working on a film around the character, as Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi) became a standout of Superman, working alongside Lois Lane and the Man of Steel with his quick wit and T-Spheres to save the city of Metropolis. While Mr. Terrific was not a super well-known character before this, it would make sense that DC would capitalize on his popularity.
However, this all remains highly speculative; just because DC has copyrighted “Mr. Terrific” does not necessarily mean a separate project for the character is being worked on. Beyond this, the copyright claim was submitted as a “word,” not a “movie,” so this may simply be a case of DC wanting to protect the character from copyright infringement. Whether or not anything comes of it onscreen remains to be seen.
‘Superman’ Is Full of Superheroes
While Superman focused on the titular Man of Steel (David Corenswet), the film was also filled with other superheroes: the aforementioned Mr. Terrific was a member of the Justice Gang alongside the Green Lantern/Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced). Another DC standout, Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) also plays a big role in the film. So while the genius mind of Mr. Terrific may or may not get his own spinoff, there is no shortage of characters for the studio to choose from. They are hard at work on this, too, with films including Supergirl and Clayface and series like Lanterns already deep in development.
Superman also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane alongside Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Anthony Carrigan, and more. Superman was directed by James Gunn, the DC Studios co-CEO, from a self-written script. The film was also produced by Gunn for his Troll Court Entertainment banner alongside DC’s other co-CEO, Peter Safran, for The Safran Company.
