After a bit of a rough patch, Sydney Sweeney’s box office dollar signs are finally returning to their former abundance thanks to the arrival of her thriller, The Housemaid. Over her last several releases, the Euphoria actress seemed to hit a bump in the road when it came to finances. Following hits like her pairing with Glen Powell in Will Gluck’s Anyone but You, the performer stalled out with more recent offerings, including Eden, Echo Valley, and Christy. In between a few busts and her revamp with The Housemaid, Sweeney appeared in a religious horror film that easily flew under many fans’ radar. However, now, Sweeney’s turn as a nun plagued by sinister secrets in Immaculate is enjoying its time in the spotlight, as FlixPatrol reveals it currently holds the second spot on HBO Max’s global Top 10.
Trailing just behind Leonardo DiCaprio and Paul Thomas Anderson’s awards-season favorite, One Battle After Another, Immaculate is blowing past more recent titles like Dean DeBlois’ live-action How to Train Your Dragon and Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme. Subscribers in countries around the globe — including Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Uruguay, and more — are all flocking to the platform to see Sweeney in one of her more rare genre appearances.
In Immaculate, Sweeney stars as Sister Cecilia, a young woman from the United States who has recently joined the faith as a nun. Having followed in the church’s footsteps since the early days of her life, Cecilia was drawn to religion after surviving a harrowing accident at a young age. When her beliefs call her across the world, Cecilia happily obliges, seeking out a new life in the picturesque Italian countryside where she joins a convent that looks after elderly and ailing nuns. Once there, Cecilia is welcomed with open arms, but quickly begins to believe that there’s something much more sinister brewing under the surface.
‘Immaculate’s Box Office History
While it may not have come close to touching the box office earnings of The Housemaid and Anyone but You, Sweeney’s religious horror film managed to fight off its production cost demons at the box office during its run. Distributed by Neon, the Michael Mohan-helmed film scared up an impressive $35 million against its $9 million budget, making it a financial success and proving that maybe The White Lotus alum should spend more time in the genre.
Head over to HBO Max now to stream Immaculate and see Sweeney in one of her few-and-far-between horror roles.
