Teddi Mellencamp had an affair with her horse trainer, Simon Schroeder, months before separating from husband Edwin Arroyave, Us Weekly can confirm.
“Simon and Teddi had a thing several months ago but it’s not still happening,” a source exclusively told Us, noting that Mellencamp, 43, and Arroyave, 47, were both unfaithful to one another during their marriage. (Daily Mail was first to report news of the affair.)
A second insider claimed that Arroyave spoke with Schroeder’s wife, Karli, who “confirmed the affair.”
Prior to their split, “Teddi and Edwin had been working on the problems of their marriage, despite his past indiscretions,” the first source said, noting, “They stayed in the marriage for the sake of the kids.”
The insider added, “Teddi isn’t excusing her behavior but this was the first and only time she strayed outside of the marriage and says there’s two sides to the story. They are both to blame.”
While Mellencamp stepped out on her marriage with Schroeder, multiple sources told Us that “Edwin has cheated on Teddi more than once” during their relationship.
The second insider, however, claimed that Arroyave was “unfaithful” eight years ago but he “insists he has not had an affair since.” The source added, “It was a wake up call and since then he’s been focused on family and faith.”
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum announced on November 2 that she and Arroyave split after 13 years of marriage.
“After a great deal of care and consideration, I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce,” Mellencamp wrote via Instagram at the time. “My priority is my children and ensuring that every care is taken with their privacy and wellbeing throughout this new chapter.”
The reality star — who shares daughters Slate, 12, and Dove, 4, and son Cruz, 10, with her estranged husband — added: “Making a public statement is not something I wanted to do, but in an effort to protect my family from undue speculation and rumors, I felt being open, honest and vulnerable was the best path forward.”
Us later confirmed that Mellencamp filed for divorce on November 1, listing the pair’s date of separation as October 20. She cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce, according to court docs obtained by Us.
Amid their separation but prior to the announcement, Mellencamp and Arroyave put on a united front and attended the Cure Melanoma Gala in New York City together on October 24. Mellencamp, who has battled skin cancer and undergone 16 melanoma surgeries, was the emcee.
“I always say life and pain are inseparable,” Arroyave wrote via Instagram after attending the special night with his estranged wife. “And to see @teddimellencamp embrace her pain and use it for the greater good again last night as she emceed the @curemelanoma gala, was a beautiful reminder of what she is capable of. Her story has already saved lives. And I couldn’t be prouder that she will continue to save more.”
While the couple’s separation surprised some of Mellencamp’s fans, a source exclusively told Us on November 6 that it was a “long time coming,” claiming that the duo have “been up and down for the last seven-plus years.”
The insider alleged, “This isn’t the first time Teddi has wanted a divorce, and it has been an ongoing conversation between them for years.”
The former spouses “have been in therapy over the years and make it work,” according to the source, who added, “They have had some really high highs and low lows over the course of their marriage.”
In the end, Mellencamp and Arroyave “have agreed they are better as coparents and can be amicable moving forward,” the insider told Us.
Two days later, Us confirmed that the divorce is moving forward as planned after Arroyave filed a response to Mellencamp’s filing on November 8. He is requesting that their prenup be enforced, according to docs obtained by Us.
Arroyave also claimed that their date of separation was on November 1, which is two weeks after Mellencamp said. Arroyave is seeking joint legal and physical custody of the pair’s three kids. (He is also the father of daughter Isabella from a previous relationship.)
