‘London Has Fallen’ (2016)
Rotten Tomatoes: 28% | IMDb: 5.9/10
A sequel to 2013’s Olympus Has Fallen, this Babak Najafi-directed action flick reunites audiences with Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Butler) as he is posted at the British Prime Minister’s funeral. However, chaos is, of course, not far away, with Banning needing to intervene in a deadly plot to kill all the attending world leaders in one fell swoop. Packed with action from start to finish, London Has Fallen might not quite reach the heights of its predecessor, but it is still a worthy follow-up. Relentless in its blood-pumping sequences and inventive on occasion, London Has Fallen is the perfect evening popcorn flick. – Jake Hodges

If you ask any Butler fan what his best performance of recent times is, there’s a strong chance they might point to 2023’s Plane. When a lightning strike causes pilot Brodie Torrance (Butler) to make an emergency landing, little does everyone on board know that this is the least of their troubles. Now in the middle of a war-torn country and with most passengers taken hostage, it is up to Torrance and an untrustworthy partner to save the day. A smart, innovative tale takes all the best of an action flick and places it in a unique setting. An exciting thrill ride with a bit of something for everyone, Plane more than deserves its high praise, including a huge 94% score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. – Jake Hodges

Brian Goodman
Directed by Brian Goodman from a script by Marc Frydman, Last Seen Alive follows Butler’s Will in the aftermath of his soon-to-be ex-wife going missing while at a gas station. This sends Will on a spiral into the criminal underworld as he desperately searches for her while the police track him down. A classic cat-and-mouse-style action flick is given the modern treatment in this pulse-racing movie. Whereas Butler more often stars in big-budget action films, this foray into the smaller-budget project makes for a refreshing turn in his filmography — one that might not suit everyone but will surely please the actor’s many fans. – Jake Hodges
