The CW recently saw a cleaving of much of its original content, with Superman and Lois being the only DC series to survive the purge. The CW CEO Brad Schwartz reveals why the series avoided cancellation.
For years, The CW’s claim to fame was the Arrowverse series of shows, creating its own mini-DC Universe on network television. However, following the end of many series like Arrow and The Flash, Superman and Lois remains as the final bastion of any DC content on the network. According to The CW CEO Brad Schwartz, the show survived as it is the biggest series in terms of linear total audience.
This comes as no shock to fans of Superman and Lois, as the show has been praised as one of the best Superman and Lois Lane adaptations of all time. This also explains why the series’ renewal came with massive cuts to the show’s roster, likely to save costs while continuing to keep the audience. Whether this gamble works out in The CW’s favor is yet to be seen, though fans will likely get their answer when Season 4 debuts.
Superman’s DC Universe Future
Superman: Legacy is a much-anticipated project, given that Clark Kent has been an integral part of the DC Universe for over 80 years, with various iterations and adaptations across different media. James Gunn promises to explore the character’s origins and his struggles to balance his dual identities as Clark and Superman while fighting off villains and saving the world.
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
