Is Chiwetel Ejiofor ever coming back to the MCU? The Doctor Strange star speaks on his potential return to the franchise along with his new role in Venom: The Last Dance.
Despite having been attached to Venom: The Last Dance since before the project even had an official title, little is known about Chiwetel Ejiofor’s role in the film. Some fans believe he’s playing the villain Orwell Taylor, while others believe he’s reprising his Doctor Strange role as Baron Mordo! When asked if this MCU crossover could be confusing, Ejiofor admitted it’s better to just enjoy the project.
“I feel the best thing to do there is just watch the film,” Ejiofor explained on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “The important conversations happen once everybody can see the films and then engage. The pre-engagement conversations are not quite as important at this point.”
“It was fantastic to work with Kelly [Marcel] in that world and to engage with a really special character that Tom [Hardy] has danced with. When you see on set when Venom arrives, you’re like, ‘Wow.’ It’s a real sort of moment. Tom can be standing next to you and you’ll say, ‘Venom’s here!’ He’s created something pretty remarkable.”
It’s good to hear that Chiwetel Ejiofor had a good time making Venom: The Last Dance. While the series is a fan-favorite, it’s far from a favorite with the critics. It’s similar in a lot of ways to Doctor Strange, another superhero franchise Ejiofor stars in, that has been a black sheep of the MCU despite how beloved the character is. Yet is there room for him in a potential sequel?
Is Baron Mordo Back For Doctor Strange?
Rumors have been circulating that Doctor Strange may be getting a sequel in the near future of the MCU. However, with Chiwetel Ejiofor now tied to Sony with Venom: The Last Dance and Marvel likely wanting to distance themselves from Multiverse of Madness, it’s unclear if Baron Mordo will return. When asked about the possibility, Ejiofor admitted he’s excited at the possibility.
“I think there’s a beautiful open door there and just finding the moment to tell those stories where it’s genuinely the most exciting part of that story you can tell and focus a light on,” Ejiofor explained. “I think has the potential to be really remarkable.”
While Chiwetel Ejiofor’s words are hopeful, it doesn’t seem that Marvel was popping over to the set of Venom: The Last Dance to see if he’d be willing to strike out as Baron Mordo one last time. It’ll be interesting to see where the character goes if he does return in the MCU though, especially as the Doctor Strange franchise ventures out onto thinner and thinner ice.
