A glance so iconic it created a whole new style in style: the revenge costume.
The time period was coined when Princess Diana allowed her costume to do the speaking for her after her bitter divorce from Prince Charles. The late Princess of Wales infamously wore an off-the-shoulder LBD designed by Christian Stambolin on the Serpentine Gallery Celebration in 1994, an occasion that took place on the night time ITV aired a documentary wherein her then-estranged husband Prince Charles admitted to having an affair with now-wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, throughout his marriage to Diana.
In accordance with Tina Brown‘s 2007 biographical guide The Diana Chronicles, Christian advised a style commentator that Diana “selected to not play the scene like Odette [from Swan Lake], harmless in white. She was clearly offended. She performed it like Odile, in black. She wore shiny pink nail enamel, which we had by no means seen her do earlier than. She was saying, ‘Let’s be depraved tonight!'”
