There’s 1 Supernatural Story That Would Make An Epic Miniseries Spinoff (& Proves The Winchesters Was Doomed)

Even though Supernatural already got one short-lived spinoff, one storyline from season 6 would make an incredibly epic spinoff series – but, unfortunately, it will likely never happen now after the doomed The Winchesters spinoff. Over 15 seasons, Supernatural was no stranger to huge, sprawling storylines with grand consequences. The overarching stakes of most seasons involved a literal world-ending threat, and, upon occasion, Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory ending, too. It’s enough that the final season even set up a hypothetical Supernatural season 16.

Of course, that opened the door for many potential spinoff series – it’s impossible not to when a show runs as long as Supernatural did. While most of the potential spinoff wishlist involved supporting Supernatural characters that fans grew to love, such as Bobby and Sheriffs Jody and Donna, rarer cases that set up the perfect spinoff involved the plotlines themselves. One of those stories was the biggest missed opportunity of all regarding Supernatural’s spinoffs.

Heaven’s Second Civil War Was Barely Acknowledged In Supernatural

Outside Of Castiel’s POV Episode, It Went Unexplored

There were hints throughout Supernatural season 6 that Castiel was dealing with something huge in Heaven, a war pitting him and his forces against those of Raphael. Episode 3 sees the angel appear for the first time in the season, and Castiel says that he has been scarce because he’s been dealing with much bigger problems in Heaven, explaining that there’s a civil war happening and that he’s right in the thick of it, marshaling his forces. Later in the season, Crowley snarks that Castiel’s forces are losing, badly, on a scale that makes the American occupation of Vietnam look easy.

Despite that enormous celestial event happening, however, Supernatural season 6 does nothing with the storyline. The only time it’s relevant to the plot is when an angel pops down to Earth every so often with their own agenda, moments that are rarely expanded upon beyond an episode. Sam and Dean barely even acknowledge the war or the stress Castiel is under or flat-out telling him they don’t care. Crowley’s line about Cass losing the war is completely and uncharacteristically ignored. Overall, the war is not really explored save for in one remarkable episode, “The Man Who Would Be King,” which shows things from Cass’s point of view.

Supernatural Season 6’s Civil War In Heaven Would Make A Great Spinoff

It Would Be A Built-in Epic Story

That’s exactly why a Supernatural spinoff featuring the season 6 civil war in Heaven would be great. As a frustrated Cass keeps telling Dean, and, to a lesser extent, Sam, throughout the season, there is a much bigger picture unfolding and a much greater thing at stake than their individual monster-of-the-week cases. He’s exactly right. Supernatural season 6’s Eve storyline is largely considered one of the weakest of the entire series, which is especially frustrating considering that the much larger, grander storyline of the heavenly war was right there.

The angels of Supernatural may possess holy powers, but they’re not all created equal. Some are weaker than a normal human.

Since Supernatural did little with the opportunity, the storyline is one that deserves to be fleshed out in a spinoff. Supernatural offered brief scenes in Heaven throughout its run, particularly in later seasons, but it wasn’t fully explored. Likewise, the immense power of angels was flashed regularly, but their powers were rarely fully unleashed. The show also never depicted what it was like to see a legion of heavenly hosts all fighting at the same time, whether together or against each other. The scope and scale of a war between the angels could be nothing less than epic, and if a spinoff focusing on it were approached like a war drama with supernatural trappings, even better.

It Just Proves Supernatural Chose The Wrong Spinoff To Focus On

There Were Much Better Stories & Characters

John and Mary looking at each other in The Winchesters

The frustrating missed opportunity of the civil war in Heaven just proves that Supernatural focused on the worst spinoff storyline with The Winchesters. John and Mary weren’t the strongest characters, nor was their backstory the best one to start with. John was largely disliked by fans, and Mary’s hunting skills were already well covered in Supernatural. The prequel story of their life together had already been covered in bits and pieces throughout the original series, so the spinoff didn’t hold many surprises for audiences.

John was largely disliked by fans, and Mary’s hunting skills were already well covered in Supernatural.

It’s a real shame, as there were so many other characters that audiences would have preferred to see in a spinoff, like Supernatural‘s doomed Wayward Sisters spinoff or even a spinoff focusing on Bobby and Rufus. Likewise, there were much better storylines to focus on than John and Mary’s early years, which had already mostly been covered in Supernatural. Season 6’s second heavenly civil war was the biggest and most epic potential spinoff storyline of them all, and it’s such a disappointment that it will never happen now.
