If you are struggling to get the answers for today’s Connections puzzle, you are about to get a surge of hints and tricks to turn your puzzle solving around. There are a lot of various ways to figure out what the puzzle is attempting to do, but the answers are the same regardless. In today’s puzzle, there are some words that I had never heard of in these particular contexts before, which made it a little more difficult to finish this one off.
If you like making matches, you will love the daily NYT Tiles puzzle. In this fun matching game, you will attempt to match the tiles to each other to clear them off the board, much like in Mahjong. However, unlike in that game, you will have to match them layer by layer, which gives it a new and exciting challenge as you have to figure out what the individual layers are. Once you do, you can create a long and high-scoring streak to show off to your friends.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
OCTOBER 30 #507
In today’s puzzle, there are two categories of things that are grouped together, but one of them has a much more general tie that can make it hard to spot. The last category is the hardest as always, but it is one of the types of categories that looks quite deceptive until you solve it. Luckily, the yellow category today is much less frustrating than it was yesterday, which is good news for all of us.
- One category is about improvement
- One category is about four things that all share a common trait
- One category is about four things that are all types of the same basic item
- One category is about four places that do not look like they should

BOOM |

SPIKE |
SURGE |
This one actually felt like it was supposed to be the easy category today, at least for me. I was very relieved to see it and that I was able to recognize it quickly. SURGE and BOOM were the words that clued me in before I had to figure out what the others would be. In the end, there was not much besides SPIKE and RISE that could fit in here, and I was able to knock this one out early. The rest of the categories were not as straightforward.

DOLLY |
ROLLERBLADE |
SKATEBOARD |
WAGON |
This one was interesting as I sort of suspected that this might be the category, but I missed the final word for a long time. I think that this category is actually harder than the next one, as those are all the same type of thing as opposed to four wildly different objects. I always find it fascinating to see what is considered to be easier or harder than another category, as it is almost never as straightforward in my mind as the puzzle claims but that depends a lot on personal experience.

PACKING |
I saw DUCT and ELECTRICAL and thought that this might be about types of tape, but, while I saw PACKING, I was not sure what the last kind of tape would be. Luckily, I was on the phone with my dad, and I asked him if GAFFER might be a type of tape. I suspected that it might be because I was only aware of GAFFER as the name of Samwise Gamgee’s father until now. I have learned that it is also an occupation, which I did not know until today.

BEST BOY |
IDEA |
KRONER |
STABLES |
BEST BOY was really getting to me as I solved the puzzle and was scratching my head trying to figure out what it might be. I thought it might have to do with horses and therefore STABLES, but while they did go together for other reasons, I could not figure out what the other two words would be. I also had no idea what KRONER might be, although “krone” is apparently a type of currency. IDEA was also quite different than the rest of the words, but it makes sense now that I know what it’s supposed to be.
