Is Tom Hardy actually going to face off against Spider-Man? The Venom star sets the record straight when it comes to a potential crossover between the characters.
The past week has been an absolutely exhausting one to to keep up with in the Venom fandom. With Tom Hardy back on another press tour, an interviewer asked if there was ever a chance for him to crossover with Spider-Man on the silver screen. Hardy said that, while they were close (as in, the characters were close in proximity), nothing ever materialized.
This led to a massive misinformation wave of people stating that Tom Hardy has just confirmed a Spider-Man crossover with Venom almost happened, but was killed by studio politics. While Hardy has previously clarified what he meant regarding his comments, he has gone on to expand on the fact that nothing was ‘killed’ in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I didn’t say that, at all. That’s kind of moved on from a very simple quote that I said specifically about my children watching Venom. It’s hard to explain to a young child why their favorite superheroes can’t be in a film together and that’s such a shame. And we almost got it, but it didn’t happen, which is the truth. It didn’t happen.”
“And we almost got together because I remember being in the Spider-Man movie and you know it was connected, and it just didn’t happen. The trilogy is now over and it didn’t happen. So, it didn’t get killed by anything, it just didn’t happen.”
“I’ve been misquoted there. People get excited about anything Venom or anything to do with superheroes and stuff and it’s sort of taken on another life. I just want to be clear that I didn’t say that.”
Tom Hardy Confirms ‘Talks’ Of Venom Meeting Spider-Man
This seems to be a rather open and shut case: Venom and Spider-Man were as close as they could be without a crossover, and a proper meeting never came to light. However, as with everything in this story, nothing can ever be clean cut. When pressed if there were any official talks, Tom Hardy admitted that there was some discussion of the idea behind closed doors, even if nothing was ever put into action.
“There are always talks, but that doesn’t mean that things manifested. There’s a future where these things will continue to be talked about until something is realized and I’m sure it will be at some point, but it just didn’t happen with me.”
To summarize this very messy series of interviews, it seems as though the idea of a Spider-Man and Venom crossover was only ever floated between the high level creatives and executives behind the franchise. However, nothing was ever committed to, meaning that there was nothing to scrap or cancel. Though despite this clarity, it’s sure that Tom Hardy will be getting questions about the cancelled crossover film until the end of time.
