Simply put, this week’s Top Comics to Buy for September 25 is a group of books with a lot of good monsters, from classic to tentacle-d to fantasy. And who doesn’t love a good monster comic? Especially at this time of year, with Halloween season now upon us. You can check out my five favorites below, along with the usual set of other lists … enjoy!
Top Comics to Buy for September 24
Goobers #1
Writer: Cody Ziglar
Artist: Ryan Lee
Colorist: Kurt Michael Russell
Letterer: Andworld Design
Publisher: Vault Comics
Clayton Lowe is headed back to his small Southern hometown. His new friends from grad school are about to meet his old friends from high school and discover that something may have finally changed in the town where nothing ever changes: Pine Cove is ground zero for an infestation of body-snatching alien-bugs. Time to bury the past.
Why It’s Cool: Ryan Lee draws some of the best monsters in comics, and with this new book Goobers, he’s teaming up with writer Cody Ziglar for southern small town horror. It’s a fantastic combination, and this first issue is such a great entry to this story and this world. Don’t miss this one — it’s the perfect way to start your Halloween comics reading.

Helen of Wyndhorn #5
Writer: Tom King
Artist: Bilquis Evely
Colorist: Matheus Lopes
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
In this penultimate issue, Helen’s frustrations continue to exacerbate as her drinking worsens and her longing for the ways of the other fantasy world continue to plague the house of Wyndhorn.
Why It’s Cool: This continues to be an absolutely gorgeous book with a poignant generational family story at its core, and this week’s issue brings perhaps the most fantasy monsters and battling yet, starting with a beautiful opening splash and not relenting throughout. I love this book.
Price: $4.99
Kaya #21
Writer/Artist: Wes Craig
Colorist: Jason Wordie
Letterer: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: Image Comics
Kaya and Jin become tomb raiders, assisted by a mysterious new ally.
Why It’s Cool: Kaya has been so good for 20-plus issues now that it can sometimes be easy to take the book for granted. But this is a fun fantasy adventure of the highest order, one that brings us kinetic action sequences every single time out. This week’s new issue is just more of the same, which is not a bad thing at all, with fantasy journeying, a new mercurial character introduction, fun fantasy monsters, and much more. I continue to be just amazed at how well this creative team works together on this top-tier book.

Revolution 9 #1
Writer: Mark London
Artist: Carlos Reno
Colorist: Jao Canola
Letterer: Dave Sharpe
Publisher: Mad Cave Studios
After years as an assassin for the Order of Nine-an ancient order dating back almost 3,000 years-Velveteen has turned her back on the very organization that saved her. Tasked with the murder of otherwise innocent hacker Jasper Dean, she sets off to save his life and discover the terrible secret that marked him for death. With the entire Order after them, Velveteen and Jasper must escape their grasp and prevent them from toppling society as we know it.
Why It’s Cool: Revolution 9 #1 marks the launch of the first comic in Mad Cave Studios’ ambitious new Underworld line of comics. Underworld is comprised of a set of standalone miniseries, leading up to a big crossover event. If this first issue is any indication though, they’ll be interesting in their own rite as well. This is a well-done and pithy secret agent comic that moves fast and keeps the reader engaged. It’s good stuff, and a great start to this new project.
Price: $4.99
Universal Monsters – Frankenstein #2
Writer/Artist: Michael Walsh
Colorist: Toni-Marie Griffin
Letterer: Becca Carey
Publisher: Image Comics – Skybound
“The Brain of a Killer.” Dr. Frankenstein’s assistant Fritz has one mission-find the supplies to make a new human being. However, a chance encounter between a police officer and a murderer may ruin even the best laid plans…
Why It’s Cool: All these new Universal Monsters comics have been really well done, but Frankenstein is my favorite of those movies, and so too is it with the comics. This book is doing such a fantastic job filling in the details around the classic film in interesting, visual ways. I can’t wait for the next issue.
