Academy Award nominee and blockbuster star Tom Cruise has finally opened up about the current status of two highly anticipated projects, Top Gun 3 and Days of Thunder 2. This comes ahead of the U.S. theatrical release of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which marks the eighth time that Cruise will be playing IMF agent Ethan Hunt.
In Top Gun 3, sequel favorites Miles Teller and Glen Powell are expected to reprise their respective roles as Rooster and Hangman. The 2022 movie was directed by Joseph Kosinski from a screenplay written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. During its theatrical run, it garnered a worldwide gross of over $1.4 billion at the box office. It currently holds a near-perfect Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes.
What were Tom Cruise’s Top Gun 3 and Days of Thunder 2 updates?
During a recent morning show visit, Cruise confirmed that Top Gun 3 and Days of Thunder 2 are still actively in development. He also revealed that he has already wrapped up filming his upcoming untitled movie with acclaimed The Revenant filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, which is slated for an October 2, 2026, release.
“Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible,” Cruise shared. “It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.”
He added, “There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now. I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant, and we’ll be coming out with that. That was an extraordinary experience and [McQuarrie] and I are always working on several different films.”
The Days of Thunder sequel was first announced in November 2024, with Cruise planning to reprise his role as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle from the 1990 movie. At the moment, the project has no official cast, director, or release date attached to it yet.
