This Trailer Tuesday brings the most anticipated comeback of the year: Daniel Day-Lewis is back on screen for the first time since 2017, starring in Anemone, the mesmerizing new feature from director Ronan Day-Lewis.
After stepping away from acting and formally announcing his retirement in 2017 following the film Phantom Thread, this project marks Day-Lewis’ first role back. To no one’s surprise, Day-Lewis is as commanding as ever, delivering a haunting, nuanced performance that immediately puts Anemone on our must-watch list.
He’s joined by seasoned actors Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) and Samantha Morton (The Walking Dead), adding layers of intensity and emotional complexity.
The Focus Films feature is a psychological family drama set in Northern England, focusing on the fraught reunion of two estranged brothers. One brother Jem Stoker (Sean Bean), a suburban man, ventures into the woods to reconnect with his hermit brother Roy Stoker (Daniel Day-Lewis) after years of silence and isolation. Their reunion is marked by tension, painful memories, and fragile tenderness, shaped by “shattering events decades earlier.” While the backstory remains a bit of a mystery, the tense trailer certainly leaves us wanting to know more.
This marks the directorial debut for artist-painter-filmmaker Ronan Day-Lewis and the father-son duo co-wrote the film’s screenplay.
Anemone opens in theaters October 3, 2025.
