Directed and written by Nia DaCosta, ‘Hedda’ reimagines Henrik Ibsen’s acclaimed play Hedda Gabler through a contemporary, deeply emotional, and queer lens. Tessa Thompson stars and serves as producer, delivering a performance brimming with internal conflict, desire, and destructive energy.
Thompson and DaCosta reunite for the first time since their work on Little Woods (2018). They are joined by a talented ensemble including Imogen Poots, Tom Bateman, Nicholas Pinnock, Nina Hoss, and more. The film’s produces include Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Gabrielle Nadig.

The story unfolds over one fateful and tension-charged night, where repressed feelings and dangerous yearnings shatter the surface of Hedda’s life, dragging everyone around her into a vortex of manipulation and betrayal. In DaCosta’s daring interpretation, Hedda’s past love—reimagined as a woman—reshapes the narrative into a compelling exploration of power, identity, and regret.
The film is set to have its World Premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7th. It will be available on Amazon Prime Video, streaming globally starting October 29.
