Supernatural has an amazing soundtrack full of classic rock songs, but one in particular holds a special place in the hearts of fans. As the story of two brothers traveling the country hunting monsters, it makes perfect sense that a show like Supernatural would have a soundtrack full of road trip staples.
The show centers on Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester, and Dean, in particular, has an appreciation for such music. His 1967 Chevrolet Impala boasts a cassette player from which Dean blares everything from AC/DC to ZZ Top. However, it’s the Kansas classic, “Carry On Wayward Son,” that serves as the unofficial theme song for Supernatural and the Winchester brothers.
“Carry On Wayward Son” Will Always Remind Supernatural Fans Of The CW Show
Are You Really A Supernatural Fan If You Don’t Sing This Song At The Top Of Your Lungs?
As a Supernatural fan, I can’t hear the song “Carry On Wayward Son” without being reminded of the show. The song first played during “The Road So Far,” a recap of the first season’s penultimate episode, and from that point on, it became Supernatural’s unofficial theme song.
From Supernatural season 2 through season 14, “Carry On Wayward Son” plays at the beginning of every season finale as the show recaps the most important events of the season. At the end of season 15, the Supernatural series finale features the original version of the song as well as a cover by Neoni as Dean drives through Heaven in his ’67 Impala.

With its killer soundtrack of classic rock hits, Supernatural provided the perfect background music for the epic saga of Sam and Dean Winchester.
In one of Supernatural’s most unique episodes, the show even highlights the significance of “Carry On Wayward Son.” In season 10, episode 5, “Fan Fiction,” Sam and Dean visit a school that is putting on a musical based on the Supernatural in-universe books by Chuck Shurley. This musical features a lovely, slowed-down version of the song sung by the all-female cast.
Kansas has embraced the song’s connection to Supernatural. The band surprised fans at San Diego Comic-Con in 2017, performing “Carry On Wayward Son” live during the Supernatural panel.
“Carry On Wayward Son” was reportedly a favorite of Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, and fans embraced the song after Kripke chose to use it in season 1 (via EW). The Kansas song stuck and soon became ingrained in the show, so much so that the Supernatural series finale is titled “Carry On.”
Supernatural Features Great Music, But The Kansas Song Is Its Most Iconic
“Carry On Wayward Son” Perfectly Fits Supernatural & The Winchester Brothers
Many of Supernatural‘s most memorable moments are accompanied by great music, but no song has come to define the show quite like “Carry On Wayward Son.” Even five years after Supernatural’s conclusion, the track remains beloved by fans and still conjures fond memories of watching the show.
Other classic rock songs, like Asia’s “Heat of the Moment,” Blue Öyster Cult’s “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,” and Styx’s “Renegade,” have also come to be associated with Supernatural among fans.
Somehow, the lyrics of “Carry On Wayward Son” fit perfectly with Supernatural and the story of the Winchester brothers. As two wayward sons who spent their lives hunting monsters and fighting evil, the lyrics “Carry on, my wayward son / There’ll be peace when you are done,” just feel right.
