‘Unboxing Mr. Coo’ Tries to Solve a Single, Complex Puzzle Box

Unboxing Mr. Coo gives you a complex puzzle box containing all manner of wildly animated wonders and asks you to figure it out.

This game is a narrative driven puzzle adventure without any words. Instead, it relies on cartoon-inspired animations and lots of visual surprises to tell its story and draw you into it. This same main character is from the game The Many Pieces of Mr. Coo, which has a lot of the same style vibes. This second game feels a lot smoother, with more interesting puzzles and better animations to boot.

This time, Mr. Coo is playing around with a puzzle box. This box has a bunch of different drawers and levers on it, allowing you to select them and see what happens. The game features some fantastic and magical reactions to your exploration and prodding at the puzzle box and the game world and everything feels very unpredictable. Opening up drawers can reveal creatures, other drawers, and even just move you in unexpected ways.

The entire game focuses on this single puzzle box, so you will need to slowly move through the different interaction points trying to figure out how to solve this strange gift. Sometimes (although rarely) there are also a few different objects that can then be used to help you progress. Whenever you fail it still feels quite satisfying as there is always a fun little animation that then results in your character resetting back to where you last were.

I guess what I really loved about the demo for Unboxing Mr. Coo when I played it at Devcom was that it felt so nostalgic of cartoons like Tom & Jerry where you aren’t quite sure how something has happened but you are captivated by what could happen next. The character itself is so animated and interesting, telling an entire story through just their movements much like those classic cartoons.
