The announcement made by earlier this week by Skybound Entertainment birthed chaos amongst horror and comic book fans. One of the most iconic Universal Monsters is being reborn for his own new limited series, Universal Monsters: The Invisible Man. The run will be of four issues, set for release in August, and comprising a massive creative team: James Tynion IV writing, DANI drawing, and Brad Simpson coloring. Yes, Tynion, the indefatigable force in horror comics has to wrestle with the invisible menace now.

The rumor went wild on the Internet, provoking quite the reactions. Some say it’s already the greatest thing they have ever witnessed, while others jest: “Is this the comic debut of John Cena?” (Nice try, but no.) “Invisible Man is basically me on Twitter,” one commenter blurted, and I find that very relatable.
Now, bring on the real stuff. The franchise fans of Universal Monsters are bursting with all the possibilities this series offers. An online outsider laid it perfectly: “Tynion is the perfect choice because he knows how to crawl inside a character’s head in the creepiest way possible.” And they’ve got a point there: If you’re familiar with any of Tynion’s writing, then you’ll know that he has an incredible gift for creating horrific psychological terror that will chill you all the way to your very core. Not that we needed another reason, but August had better hurry.
Then comes the debate about whether this will stick much closer to the original novel or take fresh spins on the character. The loyalists to the classic book want to really get into Griffin’s twisted psyche whilst others are just simply excited about what the trio of creatives could come up with. That is enough buildup for now; the Universal Monsters line is flourishing, and this will definitely be their headline issue.
A call for more monster series was leaked immediately after the announcement- Creature from the Black Lagoon anyone? And for the record, if this works out well, then we will definitely be asking for more. The Untold Universe of Monster series is practically infinite in its possibilities, and if this Invisible Man series is a hit, well then, what is next?
And then the jokes began: a Hollow Man reference here, others pretending to be invisible on the web-there is a lot of chaos with excitement sprinkled on. That’s the best part of these announcements: to watch people reacting, meming, and speculating before the thing is actually in their hands.

So go ahead and mark your calendar for August because The Invisible Man is coming… and you just won’t see him coming. Literally. Skybound has got a killer team on this, and from the looks of all the hype, this limited series might just be the greatest thing that has happened to Universal Monster in many years. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we will be pacing and refreshing our pre-orders page until it finally drops.
