Usher revealed his first encounter with Beyoncé, and his answer was not what I expected.
The “Yeah” singer was a guest on the UK radio show Capital Breakfast With Roman Kemp, and he described what went down when he first met Beyonce when they were just kids.
“She used to be in a group by the name of The Dolls,” he added.
“I don’t know if I could consider myself their babysitter, but I had a time where I had to watch The Dolls.”
The 44-year-old singer wasn’t much older than Beyoncé, as he was only 14 years old when he was first signed by LaFace Records in 1994 — so, I believe perhaps being a babysitter is a stretch.
“I was at Daryl Simmons’ house,” Usher continued. “He was working with [The Dolls] at the time, and I just happened to be over there, and they were working on a session. I kind of found my way into being their, like, I don’t know, chaperone, nanny, or something like that — the oldest person in the room.”
If what Usher said is indeed true, I’m bummed there are no random teenage Beyoncé and Usher tracks floating around on the internet. Is there an unreleased demo on a cassette tape somewhere?
However, we will always have 2008’s “Love In This Club, Pt. II” with Lil’ Wayne — and it was a truly great era of music.
Currently, Usher will begin his eight-show run in Paris on Sept. 24 and resume his Las Vegas residency, My Way, on Oct. 11.
As for Beyoncé, her Renaissance World Tour is currently underway in the United States.
I think we’re overdue for another collaboration, y’all!
