The terrible lizards of Jurassic Park are back this summer in Jurassic World: Rebirth. But that isn’t the only movie with a prehistoric rampage hitting screens this year. The VR Velociraptors of The Jurassic Games are back in a new sequel, The Jurassic Games: Extinction, and Collider has an exclusive first look at the movie’s new trailer and poster. The film will be released On Demand and Digital on June 24, and on Blu-ray and DVD on July 22.
The Jurassic Games films are set in a dystopian future where the titular program is the most popular game show in the world. In it, ten death-row inmates are sent into a virtual reality world where they must battle bloodthirsty prehistoric predators to survive. Naturally, if you die in the game, you die in real life. In this sequel, Joy LaFort (Katie Burgess, Agent Jade Black) is the show’s new host, but during her first broadcast, things start to go haywire. The trailer showcases a dizzying genre mashup, featuring everything from hoverbikes to flaming katanas to missile-launching tyrannosaurs (shades of Dino-Riders)The film also stars Leila Anastasia Scott (Erzulie), Sophie Proctor (Ghoster), and Ryan Francis (Hook), as well as Adam Hampton, who reprises his role from the first Jurassic Games; Hampton also wrote both films.
What Other Mockbusters Were Inspired by ‘Jurassic Park’?
The original Jurassic Park inspired one of the most famous mockbusters in history. With Spielberg’s Brachiosaurus-sized blockbuster set to take a big bite out of 1993’s summer box office, b-movie maven Roger Corman adapted the 1984 science fiction novel Carnosaur, which likewise deals with modern science bringing dinosaurs back from extinction. However, Carnosaur‘s method of resurrecting the prehistoric titans was even more implausible than Michael Crichton‘s “mosquitoes in amber” solution; here, the culprit is a virus that makes human women give birth to dinosaurs. He even cast Diane Ladd, mother of Jurassic Park‘s Laura Dern, as the movie’s villain! While the movie mostly earned critical scorn, it blazed a trail for new mockbusters to arise whenever a new Jurassic movie stomped into theaters, including the kid-aimed Prehysteria! movies, and the more recent entries Jurassic City, Triassic World, and Jurassic Island.
The Jurassic Games: Extinction was directed by Ryan Bellgardt; he also helmed the previous installment, as well as the similarly themed Dinosaur World and The Adventures of Jurassic Pet. It is distributed by Jackrabbit Media. The Jurassic Games: Extinction will be released on demand and digital on June 24, and on Blu-ray and DVD on July 22. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
