Is Warner Bros. Discovery all-in on the DC Universe? CEO David Zaslav shares his thoughts on the franchise following Superman‘s triumph at the box office.
David Zaslav has been public enemy #1 ever since he took up the role of CEO at Warner Bros. Discovery. This isn’t without reason. Once the merger that put him into power took place, he made a number of controversial decisions targeting some of the studio’s most beloved brands. This includes delisting exclusive shows from their streaming services, and straight up cancelling projects like Coyote V. Acme the long-awaited Batgirl film set in the DC Universe of Michael Keaton’s Batman.
Though despite how much fans may dislike David Zaslav, it’s clear that the CEO loves the DC Universe. The franchise is one of the biggest potential cash cows for Warner Bros. Discovery. However, the IP has been producing flop after flop these past few years, from movies like The Flash to video games like Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. It was clear there was hope, both internally and externally, that Superman would turn things around.
Superman’s Box Office Success Story
To say that Superman brought the DC Universe back to the spotlight is an understatement. The movie had an absolutely historic run at the box office, bringing in a stunning $217 million. It was a treat for both fans of the franchise and the stockholders at Warner Bros. Discovery. Following the success, CEO David Zaslav released a statement, praising the film and the team behind it while teasing great things on the horizon.
“Three years ago, I hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to reimagine and unify the creative direction of DC under one leadership team, by breathing new life and excitement into one of the most iconic storytelling franchises in the world. James and Peter’s commitment to honoring the legacy of the DC Universe while forging something new and enthralling is inspired.”
“I remember my first meeting with James three years ago. He spoke about growing up in Missouri and how the characters of the DC Universe weren’t just stories to him, they were like his family. His personal bond with these DC heroes was powerful and I knew then that James was the right person to bring them to life. His love for the DC world runs deep, and it shines in every frame of his work.”
“This weekend, we watched Superman soar as James Gunn’s passion and vision came to life on the big screen. Superman is just the first step. Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films Supergirl and Clayface in theaters and the series Lanterns on HBO Max, all part of a bold ten-year plan. The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”
While many may see this statement as a simple way for David Zaslav to bolster confidence in Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders, it can’t be understated how important this is for the DC Universe. The CEO having confidence in the franchise allows James Gunn and Peter Safran creative freedom in how they run the universe. This includes bigger risks, new tones, and delays if certain projects need it instead of sticking to a rigid timeline.
