Editor’s note: The below recap contains spoilers for Countdown Episode 8.
Countdown seems to be heading toward something big. After that explosive cliffhanger from last week, Volchek (Bogdan Yasinski) is more dangerous and desperate than ever — and the task force always seems to be a step behind. It’s a good thing we love Mark Meachum (Jensen Ackles), Amber Oliveras (Jessica Camacho), and the gang, because as “The Nail in the Chair” dashes closer to the finish line, we’re wondering how the writing team could possibly stretch this plotline out over the course of the rest of this 13-episode season.
‘Countdown’ Episode 8 Finds Volchek in the Task Force’s Crosshairs
“The Nail in the Chair” begins with a flashback to 2021. In Burbank, Volchek drinks at a bar and falls down drunk, grabbing the attention of a lawyer named Lubomir Piskun (Zack Sayenko). Piskun confronts Volchek outside the bar and offers to protect him while simultaneously growing his wealth in this new country he finds himself in. That is, if he’s interested. Later on in the episode, we discover that Volchek (using the alias “Barry Vusso”) spoke with the lawyer about keeping his revenue stream under the radar. He decides to do this by buying up 10 lots of Los Angeles parking real estate that will allow him to move money around without a second thought. But when Volchek tries to buy off a city official, he’s quickly entrapped and arrested. Interestingly, he’s booked at the same precinct that Meachum and Lucas Finau (Uli Latukefu) work at. Soon after, Volchek gets himself into trouble in the holding cell and is beaten up by a gang. Later, upon getting out of his cell, Volchek tells Lubomir that he plans to tear down the whole system, using his lawyer as a body to fake his own death once again.
Back in the present, Meachum is called by someone from his LAPD department the morning after Volchek’s explosion seen at the end of the previous episode. Checking it out, he finds the dead Belarusian agents burnt up on the ground and a photo of Volchek in one of their pockets. Another step closer to finding Volchek, Meachum pushes through his pain, and it’s clear that he’s getting much worse. Upon arriving at task force headquarters, he explains everything about the explosion to the team. Keyonte Bell (Elliot Knight) and Evan Shepherd (Violette Beane) work hard to come up with new leads, but Oliveras is more worried about Meachum. Though he thanks her for not telling anyone else about his tumor, she encourages him to at least tell their leader, Nathan Blythe (Eric Dane), the truth about his condition. Though he’s worried about being benched, he doesn’t want to cause any harm to his team, and so he agrees. But when he stops Blythe’s assistant Heather (Rachel Armstrong) to ask for their fearless leader, he’s already flown the coop.

Blythe Zeroes In on His Investigation Into Volchek In ‘Countdown’ Episode 8
Over at Hancock Park, Blythe once again confronts Iosif Adtapov (Pasha Lychnikoff), and this whole run-around between them is beginning to grow tiresome. Blythe asks about Volchek again and reminds the Belarusian diplomat that their problems are now the same. At this point, Adtapov cannot withhold information without causing even more of a ruckus around the city, but the diplomat sends him out anyway — but not before Blythe promises him that his friends in D.C. will contact the Belarusian government on his behalf. Afterward, Blythe speaks with his own superiors at the FBI, who give him the green light on all he needs. As all this is happening, one of Volchek’s Gallagher trucks, disguised as a USPS freighter, arrives at the Los Angeles Federal Building (aka the Wilshire Federal Building). At HQ, Shepherd gets a call from her estranged sister Molly (Michelle DeShon), but she can’t talk, especially since Bell interrupts the task force by informing them about the USPS truck.
In Westwood, Blythe, Meachum, and a SWAT unit arrive at the Federal Building. Upon removing the driver from the truck, they learn that he was hired by a service in Downy that sent him there. Everyone is soon ordered back as the bomb squad go in to investigate the truck, even though Meachum tries to ignore those orders and press through anyhow. Blythe calmly reprimands Meachum and the two watch from the mobile command unit as an operative named Jerry (Matt Kaminsky) investigates. From what they can see, there’s nothing inside the truck. Well, nothing besides a bunch of cameras strategically placed around the vehicle. As it turns out, Volchek has been watching their every move from afar, writing notes about their response time. It’s here that he sees Meachum and recognizes him from his “Jack Walker” alias he used during the three-part premiere.
‘Countdown’ Episode 8 Concludes With Some Massive Cliffhangers
After these events, Shepherd calls her mom, Lorie (Mary Beth Evans), and it turns out that her sister is on the way to move to LA with her. From what we gather, Molly is a bit of a mess, and Shepherd even describes her to Bell as a “disaster.” As these two continue to grow closer, we can’t help but see some sort of romantic tension between them. But before they get into that any further, Bell discovers land that VNK Limited — Volchek’s company — purchased some time ago. Land that they believe may be holding the other two Gallagher trucks. It isn’t long before Meachum, Oliveras, Finau, and Bell make it out to Goleta, only to find the farmland deserted. However, Volchek’s crew left behind tons of fertilizer and evidence of the fissile material.
After this discovery, Blythe believes that they’re in the final push and tells the task force to get the rest they need before the next 48 hours, as they won’t be sleeping until they catch Volchek. That night, Shepherd arrives at her apartment to find her sister. While she tries to get Molly to leave, it doesn’t work — though she does get out of late-night partying with her sister. Elsewhere, Oliveras drives Meachum home. He offers her his home as a place to stay for the night, but she refuses — though it appears that she at least wants to say yes. However, she also knows that he never told Blythe about his tumor, something Meachum promises he will do “first thing.” But where Countdown really leaves us hanging is with Blythe, who calls Adtapov to ask for his help. He tells him about Volcheck’s bomb and asks once more that the diplomat turn over everything. After all of this, Adtapov finally agrees and tells Blythe to meet him in an alley to exchange information. But when Blythe arrives, Adtapov is already dead and Volchek appears, stabbing Blythe and leaving him for dead in the alley. Talk about a powerful note to end on.
