Warning! SPOILERS about The Night Agent season 2, episode 5 ahead.
Many characters risked their lives and a few died in The Night Agent
season 2, but one death in particular was so unfortunate due to the unpredictable string of events that led to it. The high-intensity investigation that characterized the action thriller series turned The Night Agent season 1 into one of the most popular TV shows globally, but it also made it less likely for multiple characters to survive as the story went on. That was also the case for The Night Agent season 2, where one death in particular felt exceptionally devastating because of how unnecessary it was.
The Night Agent season 2 seamlessly blended multiple storylines centering on different characters into one, connecting them via a common thread. The Bala family’s story at first seemed entirely severed from Alice’s sad fate in The Night Agent season 2’s premiere and Noor’s plight to find quality information that would guarantee asylum for her and her family in the US. As every puzzle piece was nonetheless connected, it finally made sense once the bigger picture was revealed. However, what remained detached from the main story and a senseless tragedy is Farhad’s death in The Night Agent season 2, episode 5.
Why Sami Shot & Killed Farhad In The Night Agent Season 2
Farhad Shot At Sami Because He Didn’t Want To Leave Iran
The extraction of Noor’s family from Isfahan, Iran was already extremely dangerous as Sami had to plan it in less than 48 hours, but it became almost impossible to go seamlessly when Sami reached Azita and Farhad’s house in The Night Agent season 2, episode 5. Farhad’s negative reaction caused trouble because it alerted the neighbors, inciting an altercation that led him, Azita and Sami to barely escape unharmed. Then, it also attracted the police’s attention, which eventually caused the shootout on the way to the airport and Farhad’s unwise decision to take the gun and point it at Sami.
The circumstances of Sami and Farhad’s interactions and the incident happening after the shootout with the police made Sami’s reaction to shoot Farhad after he fired at him understandable from his perspective.
By the moment Farhad decided to shoot at Sami, he had already put everyone in danger by opposing the extraction. Sami shot Farhad in self-defense after Farhad fired at him, making his reaction understandable, given the difficult circumstances of their interactions and based on the incident happening right after the shootout with the police. Sami could have attempted to shoot Farhad to hurt him and not kill him, but his training might have impeded that, and doing so could have nonetheless led to Farhad’s death given the long trip awaiting them to go to the US via Istanbul and Paris.
Was Killing Farhad Justified For Sami?
Sami’s Split Second Decision Protected Himself & The Mission
The aftermath of Sami shooting Farhad showed Sami’s contrition for what happened, with his call to Peter and his behavior with Noor and Azita emphasizing it. However, in the split second it took to realize Farhad fired the gun pointed at him, Sami had already reacted in the way he had been trained to by shooting to kill. The time sensitivity of the extraction, coupled with the even bigger danger they were all in because of the commotion at Azita and Farhad’s house, made Sami’s reaction logical.

The Night Agent returns to Netflix for its second season with several new characters. Here’s who’s in the show and where you’ve seen them before.
While Sami might have regretted killing Farhad at a later time, given his speech to Peter about having a moral anchor and how Farhad wasn’t an enemy, it was impossibly difficult to make a different choice in the heat of the moment. Farhad handling a gun that he didn’t know how to use was a threat at that moment, to Sami and the mission, as, if he hurt Sami, he could have jeopardized his safety and the objective, which was Azita’s extraction from Iran even if Farhad couldn’t go. This made Sami’s decision justified in the moment he made it.
Why Nobody Is Fully To Blame For Farhad’s Death
A Series Of Unfortunate & Avoidable Events Led To Farhad’s Death
The series of events that led to Sami killing Farhad was deeply unfortunate, as any variation could have easily led to a different, happier outcome. Sami instinctively reacted by shooting to kill as he was trained after feeling threatened by Farhad pointing a gun at him, and the situation was made more difficult by Azita and Farhad’s neighbors threatening them and the police following them. Noor also felt responsible, as their extraction from Iran wouldn’t have happened if Noor hadn’t worked to get asylum in The Night Agent season 2 for her and her family by betraying her country.
The Night Agent had already been renewed for season 3 ahead of season 2’s release.
Azita endangered the already challenging extraction by not telling Farhad about the plan in advance because she expected him not to want to go, letting Noor force Catherine and Peter’s hands without all the information available, thinking she could have pushed Farhad to agree when the time came. Peter felt partially responsible as Farhad died after he pushed to get Noor what she wanted instead of going with Catherine’s plan. All this made Farhad’s death in The Night Agent season 2 the result of a series of worst-possible scenarios becoming real, turning something avoidable into a tragic certainty.
