Who Stars in James Gunn’s First DCU Series?

James Gunn lets all the monsters run wild in Creature Commandos. True to the spirit of DCU’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters”, the adult animated series features a storyline that’s reminiscent of movies like The Suicide Squad – only this time, the show follows a special military unit composed of supernatural creatures. Running the operation is the ruthless Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), whose previous experience with Task Force X has prepped her for the insanity that’s to come with this new team. Diving head first into a mission deemed too dangerous for humans, Waller orchestrates these mutants to do her bidding – for the sake of America, of course.

Creature Commandos premieres with its first two episodes exclusively on Max on December 5, 2024, followed by one episode weekly until January 16. In the meantime, check out the cast and character guide for the upcoming DC series.

Frank Grillo

General Rick Flag, Sr.

Frank Grillo voices General Rick Flag, Sr., a seasoned military leader with a legacy built on courage and discipline. A decorated fighter pilot during World War II, Flag’s service record earned him the command of the Suicide Squadron. Despite not being on the same frequency as his criminal colleagues, his number one priority is to ensure that everyone works as a team. If anything, Flag can turn the unlikeliest of hard-hearted convicts into a well-oiled machine, proving that all it takes is some discipline and iron will.

Grillo previously starred as Brock Rumlow / Crossbones for the MCU. Fans of the horror staple The Purge can also check out Grillo as Sergeant Leo Barnes.

Maria Bakalova

Princess Ilana Rostovic

Maria Bakalova voices Princess Illana Rostovic, a royal member of Buchalistan. When the princess is abducted by the evil sorceress Circe during her sleep, Task Force M is assigned to track her down at all costs. Although she’s an original character designed specifically for the Creature Commandos series, apparently she’s got some history with the leader of the Task Force M.

Bakalova’s acting portfolio mostly consists of dramatic performances in films like The Father and Women Do Cry. Most recently, she lent her dark comedy chops to the Gen Z thriller satire Bodies, Bodies, Bodies.

Anya Chalotra

Circe

Anya Chalotra voices Circe, the immortal sorceress and the notorious enemy of Wonder Woman. A princess herself, she comes from the land of Colchis and is rumored to be the daughter of the Sun. Despite her radiant beauty, she became dreadful and weary of living with the brutish, lying prince she was married to – eventually killing him in cold vengeance. A master of transformation, Circe can shapeshift into anything, most infamously an animal hybrid that even the most powerful gods themselves fear.

Chalotra’s acting roots come from the world of theater, having participated in Shakespeare’s Globe production of “Much Ado About Nothing”. She later made her TV debut with Wanderlust and The ABC Murders. These days, she’s well-known for playing the starring role of Yennefer of Vengerber in The Witcher.

Zoë Chao

Nina Mazursky

Zoë Chao voices Nina Mazursky, the daughter of the expert scientist Myron Mazursky. As a young girl, Nina suffered from an unforgiving disease that would render her lungs useless. Not wanting to lose her daughter, Myron had no other choice but to utilize his high-risk experiments on Nina, turning her into an amphibian in the process. Although Nina survives her condition, she unfortunately has to wear a glass tank, reminiscent of a fishbowl, on her head to breathe – turning her into a subject of humiliation and constant mocking by her peers.

Chao can be seen in her roles as Isobel in Strangers and herself in The Afterparty.

Sean Gunn

G.I. Robot / Weasel

Sean Gunn voices G.I. Robot and Weasel. G.I. Robot is unlike any other robot – he’s designed specifically for World War II and hates the Nazis with every metal scrap in his body. Cold and calculating, his only function is to annihilate as many Nazis as possible. Meanwhile, the Weasel is an agile metahuman with a limber body fit for all kinds of martial arts. He may not possess any superhuman powers, but he can break every bone in someone’s body in a matter of seconds.

Gunn previously starred as Kirk Gleason on Gilmore Girls before making his MCU debut as Kraglin Obfonteri for the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. In the DC world, Gunn took on the role of Calendar Man in The Suicide Squad.

David Harbour

Eric Frankenstein

David Harbour voices Eric Frankenstein, the first creation of Victor Frankenstein. Inspired by the original Frankenstein character by Mary Shelley, this undead monster is all kinds of horrors. Eric once met his demise when he sunk in the Arctic ice, but fate wouldn’t allow such marvelous creature to perish. Having miraculously survived from his near-death experience, he swam to America and lived a new life.

Harbour made a name for himself by playing Jim Hopper in the long-running series Stranger Things. He’s gone on to appear in Hellboy, Violent Night, and Black Widow.

Alan Tudyk

Alex Sartorius/Doctor Phosphorus / Clayface / Will Magnus

Alan Tudyk voices not one, not two, but three characters in Creature Commandos. Alex Sartorius, a.k.a. Doctor Phosphorus, was once an aspiring, family-loving scientist with grand ambitions. Working mainly in a nuclear power plant, his life changed for the worse when he was pulled into a chamber, exposing himself to radiation and transforming into a metahuman generating deadly radiation.

Meanwhile, Clayface was originally a B-list actor who went by the name Basil Carlo. When a production house decided to remake one of his classic films without the actor, Carlo went into an explosive fit and brought the murderous Clayface, the villain he once portrayed, to real life. Dr. Will Magnus is a brilliant roboticist whose hands are capable of designing and building the most powerful robots. Like the true mad scientist he is, Dr. Magnus is the creator of the Metal Men.

Tudyk’s acting portfolio goes back to films like 28 Days, A Knight’s Tale, and Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.

Indira Varma

Bride of Frankenstein

Indira Varma voices the Bride of Frankenstein. As beautiful as she is, she is the zombified monstress of Doctor Victor Frankenstein and the leading member of the Creature Commandos. Once a loving partner to Frankenstein, she tried to build a family and settle for a “normal” life. Unfortunately, everything went downhill when the love of her life killed their unstable son. Although the act itself was done out of necessity, the Bridge could never forgive for what Frankenstein has done.

Varma is best known for playing Niobe in Rome and Zoe Luther in Luther. With her roots also in theater, she’s earned an Olivier Award for her role in “Present Laughter”.

Viola Davis

Director Amanda Waller

Viola Davis voices Director Amanda Waller, the sharp, no-nonsense government operative with a reputation for being ruthlessly pragmatic. As the Director of A.R.G.U.S., she’s the puppeteer behind the high-risk missions, always prioritizing America’s needs before anybody else’s safety and livelihood. Having been involved in the notoriously deadly Task Force X, Team Peacemaker, and now, the Creature Commandos, at this point of her career, Waller isn’t afraid of anybody. She doesn’t hesitate to swing for both teams – with her morales reduced nothing to mere crumbs, she’s willing to take any lengths necessary to get what she wants.

Davis is no stranger to the DC family thanks to her long-running role as Waller. The Academy Award-winning actress gained prominence for her performances in The Help and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. She’s also extended her talents to the world of television, even going so far as to clinch an Emmy for her role as lawyer Annalise Keating in How to Get Away with Murder.

Steve Agee

John Economos

Steve Agee voices John Economos, the team coordinator for the Creature Commandos. He’s also the founding member of Team Peacemaker. Per DC lore, Economos is an underpaid tech genius with a penchant for hacking into computers. Unfortunately, all that time in front of the screen leads him to a pool of self-doubt and lack of personal care (once attempting to dye his beard in a bid to look younger). But there’s no questioning about his skills. The tech whiz behind tracking Task Force X, he doesn’t let his awkwardness get in the way of utilizing his expertise.

Agee is best known for starring as Stever Myron on The Sarah Silverman Program. Previously, he played Economos in the DC flick The Suicide Squad.

In “Creature Commandos,” Amanda Waller assembles a covert team of monstrous operatives, including a werewolf, vampire, and gorgon, to undertake high-risk missions deemed too perilous for human agents.
