The X-Men finally have a director! Jake Schreier gives his (rather brief) thoughts about helming the franchise’s reboot for the MCU.
Fans have been waiting for news about the MCU’s X-Men reboot for literal years- if not decades. This can be seen by just how many fancast rumors are out there on the net. Which is why it was so exciting when it was announced that Jake Schreier, who helmed both Thunderbolts and Beef, would serve as a director for Marvel’s favorite mutant team.
The director recently gave his first public comments about helming the highly-anticipated X-Men film. Of course, being a seasoned veteran of the MCU, Jake Schreier didn’t say much about what the reboot would entail. But he did tease that the material is exciting to work with, in part due to how complex the characters and themes are.
“The core idea of what X-Men is involves complexity,” Schreier explained to The Playlist “It’s an incredible opportunity with super interesting characters and [much] internal conflict. These characters are wrestling with their identity and place in the world—that’s inherently interesting and complex material.”
How The MCU’s X-Men Differs From Past Incarnations
One of the big questions when it comes to the reboot is how Jake Schreier plans to make the MCU’s X-Men feel different than the two prior stabs at making a connected universe for the team. The director still couldn’t say much. However, he did suggest that the reboot will bring a scale to the character not seen in prior incarnations.
“Yeah, I think that’s fair to say. There’s that red sniper dot out there somewhere, you know….But to be able to explore all of the ideas that are inherent to that rich source material, but also at the scale inherent to the source material, that’s like a very rare and fortunate opportunity. That’s very exciting.”
This comment suggests that fans may see the X-Mansion truly filled with mutants when it makes its debut in the MCU. The franchise has always had a very vast base of characters to pull from. And, given how much Marvel is relying on this reboot to succeed, it’s likely Jake Schreier will be getting anything he needs as a director to make things perfect.
