Melodic death metal— or melodeath if you’re in the know — is largely credited to the Swedes, along with the English death metal band Carcass, in the early-to-mid 1990s. From there, it was an explosion of fantastic bands and albums doling out some of the greatest death metal records of all time. At the Gates and In Flames in particular became the two biggest influences on 2000s North American metalcore, to the point that bands emulating At the Gates’ sound were said to practice “At the Gates worship.”
