Many anime series revolve around characters who defeat every enemy in their path and are hailed as the strongest in their respective worlds. However, in the hall of fame of powerful anime characters, strength is not limited to the ones with the most muscle or those who win through elaborate strategies. These anime characters transcend conventional fights and even human logic, waging battles of cosmic proportions.
While the scale of battles in modern series may have spiraled out of control, some anime characters have no competition and deserve to sit at the pinnacle of the entire medium’s power hierarchy. The strongest anime characters aren’t always the protagonists of their stories, but they hide skills capable of altering reality itself, overcoming death, traveling space-time to other dimensions, rewriting worlds, and even threatening entire universes with a gesture.

Father from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood reaches godlike status after absorbing immense amounts of energy and attempting to transcend human limitations. His abilities include reality-level transmutation, energy absorption, and the manipulation of entire national-scale alchemical systems.
Despite his immense power, Father’s downfall comes from his dependence on external energy sources and philosophical imbalance. While he achieves near-divine status, his control is not absolute compared to higher-tier reality-warpers, placing him below more cosmic-level beings in this ranking.

Alucard
Alucard from Hellsing is not just a vampire, he is a walking army of absorbed souls and impossibly layered regeneration. In his highest state, he essentially becomes unkillable, existing across the countless lives he has consumed throughout centuries of slaughter.
His strength lies in his immortality and psychological dominance. Even when destroyed, he reforms through the countless identities within him. Alucard’s power makes him less of a fighter and more of an endless force of undead inevitability.

Naruto Uzumaki
Naruto Uzumaki from Naruto evolves from an outcast ninja into one of the most powerful shinobi in history. Through Six Paths power, Sage Mode, and eventually Baryon Mode, he gains abilities that drastically enhance speed, strength, and energy manipulation on a massive scale.
While Naruto reaches god-tier status within his own universe, his power is still largely bound to chakra systems and physical limitations. Compared to multiversal or conceptual entities, he ranks lower in this broader anime power hierarchy, though he remains one of the most iconic fighters in shōnen history.

Cid Kagenou
Cid Kagenou, known as Shadow, is a huge fan of over-the-top displays of power, so he perfected his magical skills and swordsmanship to dramatic limits, even for someone like him. He can finish off his opponent with a flash of light, as his “I Am Atomic” attack holds the devastating power of a nuclear fusion bomb. However, Shadow’s strength doesn’t stay at the city level.
What’s interesting about Cid Kagenou is that The Eminence in Shadow anime actually makes him stronger since it moves his fight against Ragnarok into outer space. Moreover, Shadow is capable of enveloping the Earth in a protective barrier and unleashing a cosmic-scale “final atomic” attack that spans the entire solar system, turning him into a powerhouse that transcends common sense.

Monkey D. Luffy
Monkey D. Luffy’s rubberman powers in One Piece may not seem like much when the downside makes it impossible for him to swim, or even move when he hits water, especially for a pirate. But Luffy’s training over the course of 10 years has allowed him to master this power and get really creative with its limitations and secrets.
Luffy’s transformations range from “Gear 2” to “Gear 5,” each featuring a radically different method of using his rubbery nature to enhance his battle ability. Luffy is also a master of Haki, a means of utilizing spiritual power for both combat and non-combat purposes. Gear 5 gives Luffy god-like powers as he warps reality into a cartoonish parody of itself.

Satoru Gojo
Gojo is continually touted as Jujutsu Kaisen’s strongest sorcerer for good reason. While already incredibly smart and strong, what truly puts him over the edge are his cursed techniques, Limitless and Infinity. With Limitless, Gojo can essentially control space, giving him incredible offensive and defensive capabilities.
Gojo also has Infinity, which makes it so that any attack launched against him can only ever get infinitely close to him but never touch him in an astoundingly literal take on Zeno’s Paradox. Gojo might not be impossible to defeat in Jujutsu Kaisen, but his raw power makes him one of the series’ strongest by a wide margin.

Yhwach
As far as final villains for long-running shōnen series go, few can match the unyielding power of Yhwach. The leader of the Quincy more than earns his title as “the Almighty”, given that he essentially has all the abilities of every single Quincy. The Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War anime actually explains Yhwach’s past much more than the original manga.
Yhwach would already rank highly among anime villains for his Quincy abilities and his miraculous healing skills alone, but what truly makes Yhwach one of the strongest anime characters is his ability to perceive the future. More than that, Yhwach can also alter the future if it displeases him, meaning he is almost unbeatable.

Sung Jinwoo
Solo Leveling’s protagonist, Sung Jinwoo, is the world’s strongest hunter and a major force to be reckoned with. Not only does he have incredible physical attributes like strength, speed, and durability, but Jinwoo can substantially increase his powers after the end of each battle. As the only person who can level up, Jinwoo quickly dominates over other hunters.
In addition to level-up abilities, Jinwoo also unlocks the characteristic to become a Shadow Monarch, essentially taking the shadow of his defeated enemies and repurposing them as pawns and soldiers he can then use in battle.
This not only makes him, as an individual, a tough opponent, but enemies will have a hard time surviving his growing army.

Saitama from One Punch Man easily ranks among the strongest characters in anime. Few series can hold a candle to him because he’s designed around the concept of being the strongest. In that sense, One-Punch Man is quite different from most other battle anime, as the protagonist is already the strongest person around, rather than striving to reach that goal.
After three years of (not particularly) rigorous training, he can withstand any blow and defeat any enemy with a single Serious Punch. However, this unbeatable strength leaves Saitama depressed, and the series explores the emptiness that follows achieving a lifelong goal.
Saitama’s physical strength might be unrivaled, as his sneezes have destroyed an entire planet in One-Punch Man, but that doesn’t count for much when that strength doesn’t make him happy.

Goku
Dragon Ball fans are split on which of the series’ characters are truly the strongest. While some might suggest Broly or Gohan is Dragon Ball’s current strongest character, that’s only true if looking at just the current state of Dragon Ball Super. When taking a look at the broader franchise, however, it’s clear that Goku truly does deserve top rank as Dragon Ball’s strongest hero.
No other Dragon Ball character, aside from maybe Vegeta, has been shown to have as many tools in their arsenal as Goku. From Perfected Ultra Instinct, to Super Saiyan Blue, to Super Saiyan 4, to his various fusion forms, Goku has enough tools at his disposal to get himself out of almost any jam.
Though there is one Dragon Ball character stronger than him, Goku’s consistent ability to redefine power means that no one should count him out for long.
