A bit off-schedule, the 2023 Emmy Awards are taking place in 2024.

After a months-long postponement due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes last year, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards have arrived.

Breakout star Ayo Edebiri took home the first award of the night for best supporting actress in a comedy series as she continues to pick up awards for her role in The Bear. Co-star Ebon Moss-Bachrach also snagged the Emmy for best supporting actor in a comedy.

Before long, The Bear’s leading man Jeremy Allen White had his turn on stage to accept the Emmy for best actor in a comedy series. All three winning actors from The Bear were first-time nominees.

The dramedy, about a down-on-its-luck sandwich shop in Chicago, took home the top prize for best comedy series later in the night. Toronto chef Matty Matheson, who stars in and consults for the show, took the mic to accept the award but was interrupted early by Moss-Bachrach who gave him a passionate kiss.

Quinta Brunson tearfully accepted the Emmy Award for best lead actress in a comedy series for Abbot Elementary, a show she created, writes and stars in. She is the first Black woman to win the award in more than 40 years.

The win clearly came as a surprise as Brunson revealed on stage that she hadn’t prepared a speech.

Pedro Pascal handed out the award for best supporting actor in a drama series to Matthew Macfayden from Succession, but not before taking the opportunity to address the arm cast he’s been sporting recently. It’s his shoulder, not his arm that’s hurt, he said, before cheekily adding that Kieran Culkin “beat the s–t out of me.”

Culkin’s performance as Roman Roy in Succession beat out Pascal’s portrayal of Joel in The Last of Us at the Golden Globes last week. When Culkin accepted his award he playfully told Pascal to “suck it.”

A repeat of the Golden Globes took place Monday night as Culkin came out on top of a stacked roster of performers to win best actor in a drama series. Culkin not only beat Pascal, but also his Succession co-stars Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong to take the top honour.

Succession continued its winning streak as Sarah Snook accepted the Emmy for lead actress in a drama for her portrayal of Shiv Roy, the only daughter of the show’s media mogul patriarch. At the end of the night, the much-beloved show about a family of one-percenters took home the Emmy for best drama series.

Beef was recognized as the best limited series of the year and its lead actors Steven Yeun and Ali Wong picked up Emmys for their stand-out performances as Danny Cho and Amy Lau, respectively, two strangers whose stories become intertwined after a road rage incident.

Yeun and Wong are the first Asian Americans to win in their categories.

The show has been a critical darling and lauded for its representation of Asian-American diaspora communities but has also been the subject of controversy after sexual misconduct allegations were levelled against cast member David Choe.

HBO dominated in nominations this year with fan favourites Succession, which led with 27 nominations; The Last of Us, close behind with 24; and The White Lotus, snagging 23.

While the Emmys are all about celebrating the current best of the best that television has to offer, titans of TV’s past were also celebrated at Monday night’s ceremony.

Carolyn Burnett and Arsenio Hall came out to announce categories to wild applause. Cast members from Cheers and The Sopranos had brief on-stage reunions, as well.

Before the ceremony, the Television Academy and academics collaborated to create a list of the 75 Most Impactful Television Moments that was revealed Friday. The list is topped by the moon landing and includes Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, the Beatles’ appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and famous scenes from Seinfeld, The Sopranos and Sesame Street.
