It’s an unusual week for Netflix, because its most prominent shows were originally created for other networks.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is that the British series Poldark has already cracked the top 10 shows on Netflix.
I was already going to pick Poldark for the three underrated Netflix shows I’m looking forward to watching this weekend, as it was a hit on PBS.
On behalf of Watch With Us, my remaining choices include the second season of an AMC original and a new French period series.
‘Poldark’ (2015 – 2019)
Poldark is a British drama that ran for five seasons, which also proved to be very popular in the US on PBS stations. The show is based on the novels by Winston Graham and follows Captain Ross Vennor Poldark (Aidan Turner), a British soldier who has returned home after the American Revolutionary War. Ross soon discovers that his estate is nearly penniless, and the woman he loved, Elizabeth Chynoweth (Heida Reed), is engaged to his cousin, Francis Poldark (Kyle Soller).
Ross attempts to rebuild his family’s mining business and he also finds new love along the way with Demelza Carne (Eleanor Tomlinson). But romantic tension with Elizabeth remains, especially as Ross and Francis become rivals thanks in part to the machinations of their family’s nemesis, George Warleggan (Jack Farthing).
Poldark is streaming on Netflix.
‘Interview with the Vampire’ (2022 – Present)
Interview with the Vampire is the second adaptation of Anne Rice‘s vampire novel, and features Game of Thrones veteran Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac, the vampire who is being interviewed in the present by reporter Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian). Through extended flashbacks, Jacob reveals how he was turned into a vampire by his lover, Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid), and how they “adopted” a 14-year-old girl, Claudia (Delainey Hayles), and made her a part of their odd vampire family.
Season 2 picks up after Louis and Claudia have left Lestat for dead, as the vampire Armand (Assad Zaman) officially joins the interview in the present. Armand’s first meeting with Louis is revealed as he and Claudia join the former’s vampire coven in Paris. Louis and Armand may have romantic feelings for each other, but Claudia’s outbursts may draw unwelcome and potentially fatal attention to the coven.
Interview with the Vampire is streaming on Netflix.
‘Néro the Assassin’ (2025)
Néro the Assassin is a new French period series that takes place in France during the early 16th century. Pio Marmaï stars as Nero, an assassin who works for Nicolas de Rochemort (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing). Rochemort’s latest job for Nero is on behalf of a one-eyed witch (Camille Razat), who wants him to murder a young girl named Perla (Lili-Rose Carlier Taboury).
It’s not a coincidence that Perla is also the daughter that Nero abandoned at birth. Rather than kill his own flesh and blood, Nero takes Perla and goes on the run. That brings down the wrath of both Rochemort and the witch, neither of whom will let Nero and Perla escape so easily.
Néro the Assassin is streaming on Netflix.
