5 Death Metal Bands You Can’t Pronounce (But Worth Listening To)

Death metal is a genre loaded with ridiculous names that are hard to pronounce, difficult to spell and, as a result, sometimes impossible to search when you want to listen to them again!

There’s so man band names I’ve seen and instantly thought, “I hope I never have to say this out loud.” And then there’s those that I can’t say out loud because, well… you’ll see.

This list is a mere sampling of bands whose name can be a bit of a challenge, with varying degrees of difficulty. But don’t let the name deter you — you probably love Dying Fetus, so a band name is never going to get in between you and some brutal music you need to hear.

I’d also like to point out that the below band names are only hard to pronounce because of their absurdity. I refrained from picking any non-English band names and dubbing it “hard to pronounce” because that’s ridiculous — it might not be easy for for me, but it sure is for native speakers.

These ones below are universally challenging!

Eximperituserqethhzebibšiptugakkathšulweliarzaxułum

Eximperituserqethhzebibšiptugakkathšulweliarzaxułum are from Minsk, Belarus and have been around since 2011. And 15 years later, this 51-letter band name hasn’t become any easier to say.

The band once described it as being a combination of “Latin, Ancient Egyptian, Akkadian and Sumerian terms of the Chaosatanic tradition” that “entirely reveals the unutterable name of the antiuniverse.” Which is not at all helpful and possibly even a bit to lean into the absurdity. At least the’ve been kind enough to generally shorten their name to Eximperitus, which is… better.

Name aside, Eximperitus are damn good with a blend of brutality and tech-death.

Their 2026 record Meritoriousness of Equanimity is a crusher and of course features ridiculously long song titles that would make Nile’s Karl Sanders chuckle.

Sanguisugabogg

Sanguisugabogg have no problem leaning into the general unpronounceability of their name with memes and even the classic tweet: “It’s pronounced ‘Sanguisugabogg’.” Thanks!

It’s been a big struggle for the metal community, but if you take the time to sound it out, it’s not that difficult. Alas, the masses feel otherwise. And, hey, there’s the benefit of all those short form videos featuring people pronouncing their name. Then the ‘Bogg infiltrate your feed, but you can’t complain about it because you don’t know how to say it.

Despite the name and super splattery logo, Sanguisugabogg have been gaining tons of traction in recent years. Their 2025 record Hideous Aftermath showcased a big step in evolution, they’re signed to Century Media Records and are leading the next generation of death metal.

Chthe’ilist

Back in the early 2010s, Phil Tougas (First Fragment, Funebrarum, Worm, etc.) and Philippe Boucher (Beyond Creation, Dissimulator) got together and formed a band that I still cannot pronounce – Chthe’ilist. If you thought H.P. Lovecraft’s mythical beast Cthulhu was a toughie, your tongue isn’t ready for Chthe’ilist.

Though we should all get a pass on this one because, according to Tougas, the band’s name “doesn’t specifically mean anything [and] is made up [..] from an unknown language.”

It’s a good thing that Chthe’ilist are responsible for some S-tier death metal, or else this name would be way more irritating. It’s also been 10 years since they dropped their debut (and only) album Le dernier crépuscule and eight since their only EP Passage into the Xexanotth.

Come back, Chthe’ilist! Just don’t make me say your name. Definitely not three times in a row in front of a mirror like summoning the Candyman.

Öxxö Xööx

I’m not sure you can pronounce French avant-garde death metal band Öxxö Xööx. At least not without sounding silly. The only available information about the name is that (apparently) Öxxö Xööx is a symbolic representation of yin and yang and translates to “69” in a binary coded decimal system.

Or, as explained by the band in the description of their 2015 record Nämïdäë (The Last Tears): “Once a complete being of light, YÜMÄ found himself separated within matter, split into two humans, Öxxö and Xööx. They whisper and cry out a direction, the path back to their Luminous Reality. Öxxö Xööx, a life project conceived by Laurent Lunoir, is derived from binary coded decimal (BCD) : 0110 = 6 and 1001 = 9, thus 69. This desire to transform the 6 into a 9 expresses the transition from the fall into dualistic matter toward the right to liberation, and becomes a symbol of healing.”

As for the music, if you’re into mega-weird metal, this is your jam.

Qrixkuor

Qrixkuor are named after a bird in Kenneth Grant’s 1997 book Against the Light. Which is fun information, but it doesn’t help in pronouncing the Scrabble-jumble name that is Qrixkuor.

However you want to pronounce it, let’s make one thing unilaterally clear – Qrixkuor are fantastic nightmarish and claustrophobic death metal. If you haven’t checked out their 2025 record The Womb of the World, go do that right now. That’s why you’re here, isn’t it?

Below, take a look at some of the best one-and-done death metal bands there’s ever been. A single-album legacy that holds up!
