House is tricky to evaluate through today’s lens because the show is built around a protagonist whose brilliance is inseparable from his ethical breaches. We’re not meant to condone House’s worst behaviors, but the medical drama also frames him as charming, brilliant, and deeply human, making it hard to outright hate him.
Some episodes of House are endlessly rewatchable because they combine the intrigue of a Sherlock Holmes story with the addictive nature of a medical procedural. However, the series can also be challenging. Between House’s drug use and abuse of his subordinates, there are many uncomfortable episodes of House that are hard to rewatch at all.
The show feels modern, but the first season of House premiered over 20 years ago. House has aged poorly in many ways because its humor and storytelling often rely on outdated social attitudes, including stereotypes that are treated as funny or charming rather than harmful.
While the medical mysteries in House still hold up, the show’s approach to consent, mental health, and identity frequently feels out of step with today’s standards. These eight episodes of House read as problematic or inappropriate to contemporary viewers.
The Itch
Season 5, Episode 7
In “The Itch,” House goes beyond his usual ethical gray areas and crosses into outright fraud while treating an agoraphobic patient. He lies to the man, promising to perform surgery inside his home, but the real plan is to anesthetize him and secretly transport him to the hospital against his explicit wishes.
There is no thought given to consent, psychological fallout, or even what happens when the patient wakes up in an unfamiliar environment that directly triggers his condition. When that fails, House escalates further by secretly replacing the patient’s morphine with saline, effectively forcing him into severe pain in hopes that desperation will override his agoraphobia.
It is manipulative, cruel, and medically reckless. Cameron pushes back and tries to respect the patient’s autonomy, but the internal battle between doctors only adds chaos to an already fragile situation. Treating agoraphobia requires patience and trust, yet House repeatedly undermines both.
Heavy
Season 1, Episode 16
“Heavy” reflects a strain of mid-2000s television that treated weight as both a punchline and a moral failing, though it’s a topic America is still struggling with today. In the episode, House’s original team is treating a morbidly obese 10-year-old girl, and Chase fixates on her weight to an uncomfortable degree.
He repeatedly assumes her size must be the cause of every symptom, even when the girl and her mother insist she is already dieting and exercising. Their claims are dismissed, and the same advice is recycled, turning the diagnostic process into a lecture about discipline rather than an investigation.
The episode ultimately reveals that her obesity is a symptom, not the cause, vindicating the patient. While the show frames this as a satisfying resolution, it also reinforces the idea that the “happy ending” requires her to lose weight rapidly. Today, the case wouldn’t need a thinner body to validate the patient or prove the doctors wrong.
Open And Shut
Season 6, Episode 18
“Open and Shut” centers on a woman in an open marriage, and nearly every conversation about her case circles back to disbelief that such a relationship could function. The team treats her personal life as inherently suspicious, repeatedly implying that non-monogamy must signal instability, deception, or a hidden medical cause.
At one point, her increased sex drive is even floated as a possible symptom, reflecting an outdated view about a woman’s sexual agency. Rather than focusing on her symptoms, the doctors gossip and speculate, turning her lifestyle into the episode’s central curiosity.
To the episode’s credit, her open marriage ultimately has nothing to do with the diagnosis, which undercuts the team’s assumptions. Still, the framing hasn’t aged well.
When the episode aired in 2010, ethical non-monogamy was far less visible in mainstream media. More than 15 years later, it’s a widely acknowledged relationship structure. Modern versions in other medical dramas might still show judgmental doctors, but they likely wouldn’t present the concept itself as so shocking or inherently suspect to all doctors involved.
The Choice
Season 6, Episode 19
“The Choice” sees House cross a line that feels especially harsh in retrospect. Patient-of-the-week Ted collapses at his wedding and, during the routine diagnostic process — including breaking and entering — the team learns he previously dated men and underwent conversion therapy before deciding to live as a straight man.
The premise could have supported a nuanced exploration of identity, repression, and the psychological harm tied to conversion therapy, particularly if the focus stayed on Ted’s internal conflict. Instead, House ignores Ted’s explicit wishes for privacy and orchestrates a cruel reveal, bringing both his fiancée and his ex-boyfriend into the room at the same time to force the truth out.
The moment isn’t framed as a violation so much as a shocking shortcut to resolution. The fallout is bleak: Ted still wants to marry his fiancée, but she leaves him anyway, and the episode ends with his life effectively imploded.
House season 6 has several episodes that age poorly, and this is one of the starkest. If it aired today, the emphasis would likely fall more heavily on consent, privacy, and the real harm caused by House’s intervention.
Better Half
Season 8, Episode 9
“Better Half” is one of the more egregious examples of House bending medicine to “prove” a point about sexuality. House makes a bet with Wilson that he can diagnose an asexual patient without even meeting her, relying only on her file and biological samples. The premise alone is uncomfortable, suggesting House knows more about the woman’s sexuality than she does.
House then crosses multiple ethical lines, manipulating the situation and bringing the patient’s husband in for additional testing under false pretenses. The entire exercise is framed as a game, with the patient’s identity treated as a puzzle to be solved rather than something to be respected.
In the end, House is technically correct: the husband has a medical condition suppressing his sex drive, and the wife only identified as asexual to maintain their relationship. The resolution implies that asexuality is something that can be debunked if doctors look hard enough.
Even if the twist works as a one-off narrative, it reinforces the harmful idea that asexuality is inherently pathological or temporary, rather than a valid orientation that it would be shown as today. It would have been an interesting twist if the husband turned out to have his medical condition, and the wife was truly asexual, leaving their marriage uncertain.
The moment is framed as mischievous rather than invasive, and the show largely moves on without consequences. While House frequently blurs lines, this stunt makes the hospital environment feel hostile and unserious in a way that hasn’t aged well, especially given evolving expectations around workplace conduct and power dynamics.
Skin Deep
Season 2, Episode 13
This is one of the most uncomfortable episodes of House, as the protagonist spends the majority of the episode sexualizing the teenage model the team is treating, Alexandra.
It’s revealed during the diagnostic investigation that she slept with her father, and it’s framed as if Alexandra was the one with the power over him and that sleeping with him somehow gave her more control. It’s a troubling way to interpret what would be characterized today as statutory rape.
As if that’s not aging poorly enough, the “solve” of the episode is that Alexandra is actually intersex. House remarks upon the irony that the ultimate woman is a “man,” while Alexandra is clearly in distress from the news. Intersex politics would be handled with more tact and nuance today.
Carrot Or Stick
Season 7, Episode 10
“Carrot or Stick” treats a serious violation as if it were harmless fun. Nude photos of Chase, with his endowment made miniature, are leaked and repeatedly referred to as a “prank,” minimizing the real harm of nonconsensual exposure and sexual humiliation.
The show frames it as somewhat deserved, connecting the prank to his promiscuous period after Chase’s and Cameron’s divorce. The episode has him try to narrow down the culprit based on the women he slept with at a wedding. This framing is strikingly tone-deaf, as it implies that sexual harassment is acceptable if the target is considered morally or sexually reckless.
The reveal that the “prankster” claims it was a moral mission to deliver negative reinforcement is treated lightly. Chase’s response is even more problematic: he agrees with her reasoning and asks her out. Today, this episode of House would likely be seen as deeply troubling, given current awareness around consent, harassment, and power dynamics.
