Jesse Tyler Ferguson is reminiscing on the old days. The 50-year-old actor recently opened up about which of his Modern Family costars he dreams of reuniting with.
To no one’s surprise, Jesse wants to work with his former onscreen husband, Eric Stonestreet, again. But, the actor sees him and Eric on-stage instead of on camera. After watching The Bear costars, Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, come together at the opening night of Dog Day Afternoon on Broadway, Jesse opened up to People about the possibility of working with Eric again.
“We have been pitched ideas before,” he explained. “It just never has felt right.”
Aside from working with Eric, Jesse shared he’d love to work with any of his Modern Family costars.
“I mean, Sarah Hyland’s a beast on stage and I would love to be with her on stage too,” he explained, days after Sarah, 35, ended her run as Connie Francis in Broadway’s Just in Time. “Ty Burrell, I used to see on stage when he was starting off in his career. So yeah, I mean any of them really, but of course I’m going to say Eric.”
Jesse went on, sharing that he and Eric were possibly going to star in a Modern Family spinoff following their characters Cameron and Mitchell. But, he couldn’t commit to the project.
“I was interested, but I was also supposed to do this play in New York,” he explained. “It sort of felt like, as the reality of, maybe the spinoff was actually going to happen, I literally felt like, ‘Oh my god, I want to date other people.'”
Jesse and Eric’s loving friendship
The actors played spouses on screen for 11 years. And their chemistry translated into a deep and loving friendship off screen. Jesse and Eric chatted on the former’s podcast, Dinner’s On Me, reminiscing about their time on the hit television show.
The friends remembered a hilarious moment when the Modern Family casting director, Jeff Greenberg, walked into a glass wall on set.
“It’s the greatest moment ever,” Eric said. “We taped off his face mark, remember? His face mark lived that whole season.”
Jesse added through laughs: “I can’t believe that happened. He just walked right towards us.”
While the two haven’t worked together since their days on Modern Family, Eric and Jesse support each other in their personal lives. After Eric tied the knot with wife Lindsay Schweitzer, Jesse commented on an Instagram post announcing the news: “Of all second marriages, this one is my favorite! I love you both! I’m so happy for you!!!!”
Aside from well wishes, Eric has proved he is as funny as he was on Modern Family. Eric routinely posts aged photos of his former co-star on Instagram. In March, the actor posted such a photo, with the caption: “Um Jesse. Call me please,” to which Jesse responded: “I’m speechless.”
